R.I.P. Gregg Allman

Gregg Allman has passed away.

He lived a longer life than he expected and now can join his brother. Thanks for the music, Gregg.

I now have “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” blasting through the house. Betts wrote it, but it just seems right.

RIP, Gregg.

I saw him in concert in 1981. I liked the songs I knew, the songs I didn’t weren’t bad… and he played until 2:30AM virtually non-stop.
No one can ever say that they didn’t get their money’s worth at one of his concerts.

He did some acting… and good for him. I remember him best as the drug dealer from the movie ‘Rush’.
The most memorable and poignant part of the movie was the last scene, a mirror image of one of the first scenes, where he hands drugs back over the driver’s seat to an addict in the back seat. Except that this time instead of money, there’s a pistol barrel and a shot.
Fade to black.

Its implied that Jennifer Jason Leigh was the shooter, but its never determined. Its implied that Greg Allman’s character shot her partner, but its never determined.
All it really proves is that someone sold drugs for a living… and died for it. I’m almost positive that, given the personal hell that drugs inflicted on him, that this is exactly the point that he wanted to make clear to every single person watching.

RIP Greg Allman.

You fought drugs, you showed the struggle, and you may well have kept many people off of and away from them.

Blue Skies.
You Earned 'Em.

R.I.P. “Rambling Man.”

This just really sucks. :frowning:

I’m listening to “Sweet Melissa” even as I type.

:frowning:

Now he is an angel.

Maybe the worst part of getting old is watching your idols leave. Sucks.

Serendipity. Same here.

RIP.

This one hits me hard. “Whipping Post” got me through sophomore year of college.

Thanks Gregg. R.I.P.

To me they were the best white blues band ever, the best improvising/jamming rock band ever, and on the short list for best US band ever.

RIP.

This song is good advice and as good a tribute as any.

And in his honor, a zombie thread.

RIP.

Greg and his brother, Duane defined Southern Rock. A sound born from the blues played in honky tonks in every southern town.

I’ll be listening to a lot of Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd for the next few days.

At Fillmore East is playing now.
RIP

I was a big fan of the Allman Brothers; saw them in concert more than anyone else (other than some local groups), twice when they were the opening act. I didn’t become a fan until my college roommate started playing them (“Oh, that song was called ‘Whipping Post.’”).

They put out a lot of great music, and Gregg’s voice was one of the best in blues rock.

The Allman Brothers are not my all time favorite band but they are up there (top ten for me).

RIP Gregg. Thanks for a lifetime of awesome jams.

For those interested The New York Times has a nice piece remembering him and the band.

Midnight Rider

RIP Gregg. The Allman Brothers have always been my favorite band since I was a teenager. Hell, I played bass in an Allman Brothers “tribute” band during my college years. Went to see Gregg or the Allman Brothers any time they would come close to my town. I’ve probably seen them live 15 or so times. I still play them constantly in my woodshop, although I have to admit most of the live recordings they’ve released sound like shit (not the music, but the audio quality). There is a Beacon show from 92 (or 93 or sometime around then) that has great quality sound, but otherwise the live catalogue is shit. Anyway, RIP Gregg. Whipping Post is probably one of the greatest, if not the greatest, rock song ever made.
