I saw this on one of those compilation videos of car racing accidents and stunts gone wrong in 1981, so I assume it was from the (late?) 1970s.
A racing driver crashed his car and the driver’s brother was at the trackside, so he rushed to pull the driver from the car, but as he ran across the track he was hit by an ambulance and killed. I think the driver survived, ironically.
I vaguelly remember some guy running across the track following an incident
He was carrying a fire extinguisher and was running to rescue the driver of a car whose car had stopped at the trackside and was just starting to start on fire.
He was killed outright when another car driven by Tom Pryce rounded the corner and struck him.The fire extinguisher the marshall was carrying spun in the air, and struck Tom Pryce’s helmet and broke his neck, almost decapitating him.
I think it was in F1 and there is a video clip of it somewhere.
I found the clip, but its pretty bad, its not the worst incident by far, and given both the marshal and Pryce died pretty much instantaneoulsy it was something of a mercy. You can find it if you wish, but unfortunately you may also come across one or two other incidents which you would probably wish you hadn’t seen, its not forbidden territory as such, but some things are better left alone.
In 1977 Tom Pryce and a track marshall were both killed in an accident at Kyalami (South Africa). A very unfortunate and unlikely accident from a different era of F1 which is now consumed by safety concerns.
A worker was killed by an ambulance rushing to the aid of Swede Savage (who was in or close
to the lead at the time) who had just wrecked in turn 4 during the '73 Indy 500. Weren’t
related to each other tho…
That’s got to be it! I’ve just read some accounts of that accident and it definitely matches. Thanks John DiFool…no idea where the ‘brother’ part of the story came from, although when I saw it the accident had a new voice-over added for the video release which may have ‘embellished’ the facts for extra dramatic effect - it was that kind of video.
Now I would like see that accident again, just to compare the reality to my memory. I’ve found the Swede Savage crash on Youtube, but I can’t find the footage of Armando Teran (the pit worker) being run over anywhere.
