Vang is an asshole, apparently from a whole family of assholes.

I was under the impression that, in some states at least, shooting someone who was attacking you would be considered reasonable self-defense, even if they did not have a weapon.
Would you argue, for example, that a woman could not shoot a man (unarmed) who attempted to drag her into an alley and rape her?
That’s the scary part. They don’t believe he did anything wrong, and that they are the injured parties.

I suppose given a number of circumstances, you could. Lautenschlager is not my personal hero, but she hit the nail on the head with this: “His response was grossly disproportionate to the threats.” Yeah, that’s right, they threatened to call the DNR and report his tag number. There was no evidence that anyone did anything but perhaps push him or stand in his way, if you believe Vang.

Pity his actions as a trespasser and poacher precluded him from being able to call the Sticks & Stones Police, thereby leaving multiple murders as his only option.
Grrr. I’m glad he’ll be getting mandatory life sentences, maybe if he spends the rest of his mortal days in a cage he won’t go out and hunt down and murder anybody else. Anybody who thinks it’s okay to slaughter people due to racist remarks has to be removed from society forever.
Christ, it’s a kid you’re talking about here. Cut her some slack. Vang is 36, which means that his daughter is probably somewhere in her early to mid teens.
She is not responsible for her father’s actions, and she’s probably having a fuckload of trouble processing what has happened to her family as a result of his crimes and conviction. Even when families know that what a loved one did was wrong and deserves punishment, it doesn’t make it any easier for them. As far as these kids are concerned, their father might as well be dead because they’ll never see him again outside a prison cell. While i don’t feel any sympathy for Vang himself, i do feel for those kids. Not only do they now effectively have no father, but they have to live with the stigma of being the children of a mass murderer.
It’s also not clear from the CourtTV article exactly what was claimed in the trial. After all, according to your quote, Vang said that “no one in the group physically threatened him with violence.” Yet the same article also says:
The only people to counter this claim are members of the other group who, if Vang did not fire first, have every reason to lie about it.
Note: i’m not saying that i think he’s innocent, or that i believe everything he says. Only that, in a situation like the one described, it would not surprise me in the least if the members of the other party told a story that painted themselves and their (dead) friends in the best possible light. That’s not necessarily about race; it’s just people’s natural reaction to stand by friends and family.
And none of this would excuse Vang’s actions anyway. Even if his first shot had been in self-defense, he shot four of his victims in the back. He’s an asshole and deserves to spend the rest of his llife in jail. All i know is, we’ll never know exactly what was said, and what happened out there on that day.
I got really ill when one of the killers relatives said “God did not judge here” or some such remark. Did that guy let God judge those that called him names? No, he was judge, jury and excutioner. I feel for the kids - they probably don’t really understand what’s going on
If a guy who looks like andre the giant is trying to beat me up, I don’t think having too much trouble convincing the police I shot him because I was in fear of my life.
A point of clarification: I was referring to the case, not to every fathomable event. Self defense has to be in kind to what you are defending against.
I can’t find her age, or a picture of her, but other articles refer to her as a ‘young woman’ and she looks to be at least in her late teens. video link She is shown around 2:20. She’s been the acting spokesperson for the family throughout. IIRC, she didn’t even still live with her family when the shootings happened.
There are many inconsistencies with the three accounts of what happened. The two surviving victims didn’t even agree on who had the gun when. I’m not sure if they know for sure that the victim’s gun was fired. My guess is that the whole situation was very confusing, but that the results were plain.

By similar reasoning, Vang is probably lying when he claims that the hunters used racial epithets. (They denied doing so.) But you don’t see people questioning that, because “everyone” “knows” that white hunters are racists. So instead of reporting the real and obvious problem of Hmong violence, the media directed their attention at the climate of racism they were just sure must exist out there somewhere.
How about your father’s other wife or wives? (He was a polygamist.)
To portray herself as the victim here, and in particular a victim because she is fatherless, is the height of assholery, her age notwithstanding. How about his uncle and sister, who are actually proud of his actions? Like the OP said, a family of assholes.
