Small town Minnesota high school “promposal” goes viral and not in a good way. Teen writes his invitation to his girlfriend on poster board. Looks like it was done by a preschooler. The wording is so stupid that even if you take out the racist stuff it’s still stupid. Teen girl is so impressed she poses for a pic with him holding the sign, possibly in the school parking lot. You have to see the picture to get the full effect.
School announces there is no racism in Big Lake. And so it goes…
“The fact that you’re here doing this report perpetuates that fear, it perpetuates the racism,” said Geri who has children who attend Big Lake. She went on to say, "this is not a racist town, this is not a racist school. This is at the heart of the people who made that choice. They are, as all of us are, responsible for our own actions.”
Ah yes, racism is caused by people reporting on racists.
I got access denied for the link in the OP (from the UK). Just in case this is a more general problem for non-US, I found this, which appears to be the same story - have I got this right @mordecaiB?
Jesus! It’s exactly the same thing. I wonder how many more of these are out there? No way these three came up with that sign out of the blue. Is it a play off of a saying that wasn’t racist to start with? I guess nothing is new under the sun.
I notice there doesn’t seem to be any follow up to these two stories, the only consequences I see is that one of the guys was “talked” to.
I share their confusion. This is about some high school student, and I see no mention that they plan to major in English or Art in college. “Racist high schooler is racist” would make more sense as a title to me.
From the title, I expected this to be about some sort of racist art project made in college.
I assume it’s a joke about how badly written the sign is, but I don’t quite get it.
I want to say I’ve heard “Blacks pick cotton, whites pick X” before, but I don’t remember where. It may have been some previous news article or it may have been a stand-up routine.
