I first read of this yesterday- a cargo ship approaches NJ on the 11th and is detected to having alarming radiation levels, as well as the emission of strange sounds. The Coast Guard forces the ship out to 6 miles, and today the SEALs board the ship, and an investigation starts. This has received alarmingly scant coverage:
I am with you on this one. I can’t understand how something like this is not even a blip on the media radar screen. There are a lot of unanswered questions on this. I for one would like to know about the ship’s log, every crewmember and where they are from, are they muslim, how much radioactive material are we talking about, who owns the ship, where has it been? This is a pretty big deal in my book and small “misunderstandings” like this that are merely overlooked can lead to disaster down the road.
I don’t see any reference to “strange sounds”: in the linked article and it ooks like the Navy SEALs have the matter in hand. Radioactive material is commonly used in medical applications, and it’s entirely possible that containers have cracked or something else equally mundane has happened.
How much coverage would you expect? The ship is six miles out toi see and under quarantine, so it’s not like any reporters have had a chance to investigate the scene or interview the crew. Give it a week.
Well, it’s from Liberia- so stoaways could explain the noise. But how did they detect the radiation in the first place?
Ah, well, I first read about the strange noises yesterday. Haven’t seen mention of them since, actually.
Wow, the radioactivity must be affecting my ability to spell.
Followup, this taken from an AP article:
“The ship was directed to a berth at the Port Newark/Elizabeth Marine Terminal after a Coast Guard team boarded the vessel Tuesday. Team members reported hearing suspicious sounds in several of the ship’s cargo holds, but found no evidence of stowaways and said they could not determine the source.”
(bolding mine)
It’s a ship owned by a German subsidiary of a South Korean company. Where do Muslims come in?
I heard about this once on Sept 11th, and then never again. Can we assume that they probably didn’t find a nuclear bomb?
Why would anyone care about that, we’re all broken up that Lance isn’t going to space. Who cares if they found a nuke in NY harbor.
I saw a report on CNN on the 11th. They explained that the radiation detectors are VERY sensitive. If you have had a cancer treatment you would set it off days later. Plus certain ores have naturally occuring radiation plus all cargo containers are metal so if any sort of radioactive material was in it previously it could still give off a reading.
With that said.
One the 11th the office next to mine was empty and the tv was left on in there with the lights in the room turned off. (NYC midtown) I’m in the office alone watching this story and they show a map of where they took the ship out to see. I think to myself that it must be about 10 to 15 miles behind me.
In NYC that day it was partly cloudy. At about that moment the sun came out from behind the cloud so my expierence in the room was a sudden very bright light turning on in the direction I was just thinking the ship was.
After giving myself some CPR I was ok but my shorts needed changing.
