No Pittings, and I’ve never even been the “guest of honor” in a thread in another forum, either.
Surely I can’t be the only person to have a thread devoted to them in alt.fan.cecil-adams days, then spend three-and-change years (and 2600+ posts) on this Board in near-total silence.
There could have been one, and I either missed it or don’t remember. I just did a search and couldn’t find one with my name in the title, but they don’t always have the name of the pitted in the title.
I don’t remember one, so I searched and didn’t find one, although I was surprised, as I go months without visiting the Pit, to find that I’d started a few
Some think it’s a mark of some kind if you’ve been pitted… a badge of honor, an acceptance into the community. Others think that not being called out is a good thing, not bad.
Frankly, any place that wouldn’t accept me until they attacked and skewered me ain’t no place o’ mine.
I wish it did! But hopefully the antagonist was flummoxed, bewildered, and crestfallen - and then properly ashamed of his or her gauche conduct in the wrong forum.
I doubt anyone notices me enough to pit, but who knows. And who knows if dopers have said terrible things about me offline or in private email? That’s how it is when you are active online.
In case you were wondering, I would never pit anyone.
Wait a minute, I’m not truely a doper untill I’ve been pitted?
OK here it goes: [clears throat]
Screw all you guys, I think your a bunch of jerks with nothing better to do than to sit there in front of your stink’n computers; playing on this board! Get a life already!
[runs to the pit and waits patiently to be pitted]
I was once, but it was pretty lame. Its genesis was in an “Ask the guy who uses prostitutes” thread. The pitter was asking outright how to pick up a hooker. I said that wasn’t appropriate. He didn’t like that, I guess. The thread was basically dead before I even got to it as people jumped on him as soon as he opened it.
I have been in several heated* exchanges all over this board, including the Pit. If I’m not joking around, and you see me in a Pit thread, chances are I’m being flamed (or at least questioned hard) by someone.
But, I have never been the object of a Pit thread
*Very heated and sometimes mean, petty, and stupid. (On either side, I’m sure)
I’ve been pitted twice. The record of the last one is gone, since it was during the “Great Blackout”. The first one is still there and I just went back and relive the experience. It was memorable because I was pitted by a moderator. What nobody else knew was that I emailed him at first and asked why. He emailed back basically for me to shove it. After that I really didn’t care what was said in the thread. When the board recovered from being down for so long the code had been changed and I could no longer do what was being complained about. I’ve often wondered if the change was because of me or just appeared that way.
[ul] [sup]I still use it in a different form.[/sup][/ul]
The second time was about the same thing. The pitter said I did something all the time. I pointed out that I had posted to a thread she had started, in a very serious manner. That ended the thread real quick.
