rand vs. rand

though there most probably is a factual answer to this question, i shall put it here in mpsims. if it needs to be changed please do so.
what, if any, is the relationship of the “rand” in ingersoll rand to the “rand” in rand mcnally?

William Rand is the Rand in Rand-McNally, and the Rand in Ingersoll-Rand comes from the Rand Drill Company, one of the companies bought by Michael P. Grace in 1905, the other being Ingersoll-Sergeant, and merged into Ingersoll-Rand.

So apparently no relation.

Oh, and apparently the Packards of Packard-Bell and Hewlett-Packard aren’t related, either.

Imagine my chagrin when I discovered this was not covering the Ayn vs. Rose jello match, held in secret in a basement normally used for chicken fighting in rural Louisiana, May 1939.

Okay, you owe me a keyboard!

The Rand’s that founded The Rand Drill Company in 1871 were brothers Jasper R. Rand and Addison C. Rand. Rand’s a pretty common name and I suppose that if you dug back far enough the two Rand families might share a common ancestor as they are both English, but there’s no reason to assume so.

Okay, so what about Ayn Rand and the RAND corporation?

Heh. I thought this was going to be about two different random-number generators.

I think maybe I need a vacation.

RR

On the off chance that you’re serious, or that your question will confuse someone who doesn’t know: RAND stands for Research ANd Development.

Cite.

But are they related to Andrew Packard?

Do they own the Packard Saw Mill?

And picturing it in a Spy vs. Spy motif? With true rand(seeded by pictures of cloud formations or other truly random events) facing off against pseudo-rand(seeded from a number)? Pseudo-rand is faster, but occasionally self destructs. True rand takes his time and is completely bulletproof when he finally reaches a conclusion.

Maybe I need to take some time off too. The Weird Al concert I’m seeing tonight should help. Of course taking time off a geeky job to go see a geeky musician probably doesn’t help my cool cred.

Enjoy,
Steven

If I recall correctly, you’re a former professional Magic:The Gathering tournament player. By definition, you never had any cool cred, my fellow nerd.

Also, Ayn Rand was originally Alisa Rosenbaum, so she’s likely a more distant relation of William and Jasper Rand than they are of each other.

My thought upon seeing the title was that the OP was going to refer to the possibility that the etymology of rand (the currency) is somehow related to the name of the Rand Daily Mail newspaper.

As the first paragraph of the money article indicates, there is indeed a connection – “rand” means “ridge” in Afrikaans, and is often used to refer to the Witwatersrand (white waters ridge), the range of gold-bearing hills in which the Johannesburg metropolitan area is located. Meanwhile, the Krugerrand is a gold rand coin bearing the image of Paul Kruger, who served as State President of the South African Republic during the early days of the 1899-1902 Boer War.

well, thanks everyone. i learned more then just the answer, cool.
