Listening to a really good piano/mandolin/guitar/sitar player. Or any really beautiful classical music (and there’s a lot of that).
Favorite song on the radio is good, too.
Re-discovering something you enjoyed as a child.
English/Irish/Welsh/Scottish accents.
Really connecting with someone.
A baby’s laughter.
A bunch of brightly colored birds at the bird feeder.
A really good cookie.
A call from an old friend.
The first sip of an excellent cup of fresh coffee (I usually get busy after the coffee’s made, and don’t get to drink it immediately very often).
Having a finished, or almost finished poem just “drop” into my head (this hasn’t happened to me for a while, but I sure enjoy it when it does).
Getting a new idea for my jewelry.
Walking around outside after a snowstorm, enjoying the intense quiet.
What is it in particular that you guys like about Southern accents, and which accents are you talking about? Is it the generic country Southern accent, or is it the Tidewater South Carolina and Georgia accent, or what?
Your statements leapt out at me, because most people I’ve spoken to HATE Southern accents. Me, I’m proud of mine.
The Great Philosopher says this while listening to, and I quote:
"(drummer starts playing a really upbeat tune) ‘ay, ay, ay, ay, cut that fookin’ jazz nonsense out man’ (guy keeps going) ‘I said fookin’ stop it man, I’m tellin’ ya’… "
The most beautiful thing I’ve ever experienced
It’s 4 in the morning, you’ve been driving all night long. Who knows where you are right now? All that matters is that you get to where you’re going so you can get the heck off the road. One more mile of highway and you swear those little white lines are going to jump up and strangle you. Why won’t the radio play any good songs? Dammit. You follow the twists and turns of the road through the hills, world-weary and yearning for home. Then you come around a corner and see heaven.
Actually, it’s a city laid out below you, in the next valley. The coming dawn combined with the dotted streetlights creates a glow around the town, and the sky on the horizon is a gentle velvety grenadine red, fading softly to indigo and black. The shadows of the fleeing night still hide in pools around buildings and out of reach of streetlights, shining like Christmas lights in summertime. It’s absolutely sublime.
That is exactly why my father and I love trucking.

I don’t know what, specifically, I like about Southern accents. They’re just nice! My personal favorite, though I like mostly all of them (the really flat twang I’ve heard in parts of northern Mississippi and those A-states that border it annoyed me a little), is the way my cousins talk, down in south-western Virginia (Appomattox, to be precise). They say “mo’” for “more”, which I’ve always thought was adorably cool.
*Mail, anything that someone actually took the time to write by hand
*Hallmark or any kind of card really, when youcan tell that the person actually put some thought into picking it out and then wrote something sweet or funny in it.
*That moment when you realize that a friend really cares about you. Not just to say so but they actually do feel something for you. I love you Russ and Rachel.
*Hearing “I love you” and fully believing that the other person means it. Although it may have happened that the person didn’t but if you believe they did you can still be really happy.
*Having my puppy dog try to comfort me recently when I go outside to cry, he’s really adorable when he’s worried…

Random happy for me:

[li]Seeing a castle on a calendar[/li][li]Finding a penny in the mud. Makes my day! Better than a quarter, even.[/li][li]Stumbling onto old photos in the desk drawer[/li][li]Looking up into misting rain in winter[/li][li]Seeing “shapes” in the dust bunnies under the bed. Going to sleep on flannel sheets, fresh from the dryer
Driving a power boat in choppy water
Driving a convertible on a hot night with the top down
“Girl Night” with my sister - last time it was sushi for dinner then home for a stupid movie, Ben & Jerry’s, and self administered pedicures on the living room floor
Watching a 2 year old figure something out for the first time - like my cousin Molly’s discovery that ice will transfer cold to metal
Rainy nights spent in bed with a good mystery and a pot of tea
