Random Return of the Jedi question...

“None comprehended!”

  • The Tick

It’s sort of like when I was watching the original “V” awhile back. Robert Englund’s character is supposed to be a dorky, awkward Visitor who tells an interested human woman he “knows he’s not exactly an ox[sic]”. How do we know he isn’t actually considered very attractive among his people and he just got stuck with an ugly human suit?

But I digress.

I figured she was already on Jabba’s shit list. (That’s why she is all chained up when we first see her.) then, after refusing Jabba’s… advances… he dumps her into the pit just 'cause he can.

“If you live to see the dawn, it’s because I allow it.”

  1. Oola is a slave to a Hutt crime boss. She lives at Jabba’s whim. He throws her to the rancor just to demonstrate he’s a card carrying villain. Aside at mlees: A chained-to-the-dais slave is already on the boss’s shit list.

  2. The main reason for the scene is to establish that the throne room has a trap door to the rancor pit. The second reason is to demonstrate that Jabba enjoys creative executions. (From the EOL: Shooting is NOT too good for my enemies.)

  3. Oola is hot, in a Twilek kind of way.

A couple random things to add about Oola:

  1. There’s a nipple slip with her in the scene. I don’t remember where exactly and I don’t have it on DVD so I can’t go through frame by frame, but if you’re into twilek nipples, it’s there.

  2. I rememeber reading (I don’t have a cite) that when Lucas filmed the special edition, the dancer was actually in better shape than she was years ago. She had a kind of “Hey don’t forget about me!” moment with the crew and was added.

  3. If she was all chained up, what happened to the chains when she was dropped into the pit?

That’s what I said…

The actress/dancer was Femi Taylor. I had heard that she ended up shooting new scenes for the Special Edition because her adopted brother, Benedict Taylor, played Bravo 2 in Phantom Menace, and told Lucas that his sister was still in dancing trim. But looking at dates, I don’t know how much credibility, if any, to give to that version of events…the Special Editions came out two years before Phantom Menace, but I don’t know how long they were shooting the latter film, and whether Lucas would have been editing the SE in a time period when Taylor would have been able to even have been around to recommend his sister for reshoots.

Check the rancor’s litter-box.

If you watch, when Jabba thumps the “open the pit” button, the chains are hooked into big eyelet-type things on his throne. They simply slip loose and fall after her.

I’m giving Star Wars the benefit of the doubt and claiming that Jabba’s minions are smart enough to rig the “open the pit” button to also be the “unhook the top of the chains” button.

In other weird news (yes, I know too much about Star Wars sometimes) one of the reasons Jabba is on Tattoine is because he’s considered a pervert by the rest of the Hutts. He’s got this sick fetish of liking skinny weeny alien women, instead of huge blorbolous Hutt women like he’s supposed to. So they kicked him out of their home system.

From what I recall didn’t Jabba and Oola have a verbal exchange as he dragged her over to the trap door?

There seems to have been a translation for Huttese by the fanboys but I can’t seem to find the translation for that bit of dialog.

I like big Hutts and cannot lie…

So you did. :smack:

FWIW, ISTM that the job of chained-to-the-dais barely clothed dancing girl, where the dais has an “annoying being disposal” trap door, is automatically on the shit list. I understood your post as saying that Oola herself was on the list.

IIRC from Tales from Jabba’s Palace, Jabba & gang bought Oola specifically to be a dancer and dais-warmer. So her place on the shit list was business and not personal.

@ Lasciel: So Jabba and Admiral ZEK share a perversion? Eew ^ 10.

that makes more sense as to why a giant space slug was so at home on a desert planet.

It was when Benedict Taylor was making an episode of Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.

1.) I think that actually, while her chain is at some point rigged to the dais, Jabba is actually holding it himself when she is dancing, and he drops the chain when he opens the door. That makes a bit more sense to me…why would she try and pull her chain away if it was locked into the dais? Not that pulling it from a giant slug who couldn’t be moved by a 2 ton truck makes much sense either…but no one said she was Einstein.

2.) Re: JCorre; yeah they totally DID have a verbal exchange, and I couldn’t find a translation either. “Boscka” I’m assuming means something bad, seeing as he kills her immediately thereafter.

3.) She was definitely not in his favor, right…is it implied that she DID something to earn her spot of dishonor? Could she have been voted “worst dancer” in a court poll or something? Or was it just random…I guess no way of knowing for sure.

OTTOMH, Oola was bought to be a dancing girl. And Jabba is presumed to be perverted by Hutt standards. So I opt for “just random, sucks to be her.”

Since we’re talking about Jabba’s perversions, I suppose this is a natural, albeit very disturbing question:

Was Leia assaulted by Jabba?

I somehow doubt she was told to go into a dressing room and change her outfit. Plus she was very docile when Luke arrived, implying something broke her spirit. This from a princess who defied Darth-fricken-Vader and his probe droid to end in ANH.

I’m sure Lucas script simply said “Next scene, she appears in a fanservice suit”, but has there been speculation/EU stuff?

::slap!::

Had to be done.

Fanwankery: I imagine she was told that, backed up by the threat of torture or death. And she complied.

See, the difference between Vader and Jabba is that Vader wanted information. If she gave up the information, more people than just her would suffer. It could mean the end of the Rebellion if she broke, and at the very least they’d lose a chance at a major victory over the Empire. So she stonewalled, because there was more at stake than her own life.

On the other hand, Jabba didn’t care about information. He just wanted a pretty plaything to entertain him, or maybe even to ransom off later. The only thing she’d lose if she complied was her freedom, and probably only temporarily. So she played along, waiting for an opportunity to escape. Resisting would have resulted in nothing more than a meaningless death.

Leia knew Luke was on his way. Her capture would have been factored into their plan as a possibility of occurring, so she played along.
