Random things you'd like to buy that are slightly too hard to obtain

I’ve been looking for a long time for a mint-condition Wendy’s dining room table, with all those old adverts on it. Haven’t found one, however.

I want a hot woman who has a thing for slightly chubby middle-aged computer geeks.

Oh but that won’t do, no no. I’m with you Martini. Being a die hard fan of Erich von Stroheim (one of the few actors “who could wear a monocle without looking as though he’s about to drop it in his soup”), I’ve looked for one myself for ages. Unsuccessfully. The ones you find are like that one on ebay, it has a metal thingy - a grip, and that’s not the real thing. The real thing is the circular glass lens which you bolt in your eye socket bones (sorta), like that, and keep in place with numerous elegant manipulations, like that, (a monocle is the actor’s ultimate prop it seems to me) and that does not exist anywhere on this earth it seems. I did manage once to buy a “face-à-main” (dunno the english word) in a flea market, but no monocle.

Candlestick telephones, on the other hand, are a bit easier to come by. I have a few of those in my antique telephone collection. The one I’m proudest of I found in Havana, it’s all metal, shiny, beautiful. I also have a collapsible top hat that still works (it still pops), but still no monocle sigh

I’ve always wanted one of these…but they seem to be nearly impossible to find. A few are on EBAY, but generally in bad shape. The one I would like is of green silk, with a padded collar/lapels, and sash. Just the right thing to wear, while enjoying brandy and cigars in the study! Does anybody know when the smoking jacket made its exit? was it before WWII?
Oh-and double =breasted vests-those are cool!

A key for my daughters Ed Roos Cedar Chest.

I just purchased one for my daughters seventh birthday but the seller did not have the key.

I have googled and googled and although I did find a lot of info on Ed Roos I can not seem to find out where I can get a key.

I can tell it is just a skelton key but I am sure not just any key will work.

I have seen Ebay auctions for skelton keys but I am not sure I want to pay a lot of money for 35 odd keys with no guarantee that at least one of them will work.

A friend gave me a bottle of (Czech?) absinthe. I was underwhelmed; never saw the green fairy.

Well, I’ve always wanted to try dropping acid just once.

I’d also like a pet pufferfish, so that I can rap on the tank and watch him puff up. Maybe a sea cucumber too, so I can watch him expel his entrails. And maybe a little bitty squid, for the ink.

I’d have the best aquarium ever, but heaven help us all if the neighbors ever take up playing drums.

Wait. My mistake. I didn’t notice the word buy in the title. My apologies ladies.

Just the thing to pep up the libido, Sex outdoors is usually intense.

crew-neck sweater vest

Inthelake, the glasses-on-a-stick things are called lorgnettes. That’s still not an English word, but that’s what they are called.

I want one of those bulky shawl-collared button-up sweaters you see on old, male politicians in movies. They’re oversized, heavy, and look just perfect for cold winter days.

I’ve never seen one in a store.

Try Irish or Scottish stores. I found mine on ebay but I saw others at those stores. Pricey though.

**SomeUserName ** "A key for my daughters Ed Roos Cedar Chest. " take it to any old time locksmith, they will have one and it won’t be expensive.

I’ve finally found a top hat like I’ve always wanted, but like others in this thread, I’m still on the look-out for the right monocle. Those eBay ones aren’t at all like the kind you see in old movies. I’ve only ever seen one on eBay like I’m looking for, but it sold for much, much more than I was willing to spend.

They’re all over the place here. You can’t step two feet into any antique store without tripping over a half dozen à la Laurel and Hardy. Pristine condition, they go for on average $300. Functional but in need of cosmetic work, say half that. Expect to spend around $50 to have the gasket in the reproducer replaced, it’s surely dried out. I bought one a couple years ago for $5. Granted, the spring was broken, but replacing the motor was a matter of four screws and a $21 trip to eBay.

Diamond disc players aren’t as ubiquitous, but they’re hardly difficult to find. Same general price tag, maybe a little more, but since there’re fewer of them, you don’t have quite the selection and can’t be as picky about condition.

Replacement needles can be bought new. Get a lot, they wear out quickly–you should use a new one for each side of each record. I don’t know about diamond discs needles, but somebody somewhere must still be making them.

I restore old vacuum tube electronics for a hobby (well, one of my hobbies).

Finding a vacuum tube in its original box (rare, but if you know where to look…) is like finding a treasure… If that tube isn’t one I currently need I will buy it anyway.

as:

  1. even if I don’t need it, I might, and
  2. I might be able to trade it for one I do.

I found a box of 1 dozen 1U4 tubes (used from 1930’s to 1950s) at a garage sale. They had belonged to the person’s father, who had a radio/tv repair shop. It was priced at $2 (CDN)… I acutally haggled “up” from that price saying "I know you just want to sell this, but I am gonna remarket them/ use them at a real profit here… can I give you $5.

(Aproxamate worth, about $350)

FML

Me three! At last, I’ve found my people! (Miniature display tent)

Here you go.

I have a shitload of vacuum tubes. I just liked the way they looked, tried to buy all the big, cool looking ones I could find at ham fests. My electonics instructor scored me a 25Kv thyratron tube from a radar installation, about 2 ft tall and glass, not ceramic. It got the top broken off during a move. I had all the ones that would fit in a display case and hung on the walls. During the “buys” I picked up several boxes full of small radio tubes, always wondered if there was any value in those.

I can’t remember all the types, I do remember having the whole Eimac 4-XXXX series, at least the 4-1000, 4-400, 4-250, 4-125, and 4-65.

Doesn’t surprise me that there’s another tube collector aboard, although mine have been gathering dust in the garage for 15 years or more.

ETA, shoot me a PM if you want to talk tubes, I can still kinda get to them without much trouble.

You can get a new sextant here: Edmund Scientific , it really works.

I took celestial navigation when I was college.

Mercury switches.

Given the fairly recent mercury scares, I doubt they’re even legal anymore, but I’m not sure.

A friend of mine bought a motorcycle that had a homemade tilt-sensitive alarm that used mercury switches. He took it apart and I quickly snatched away the switches before he trashed them.

I don’t really have a specific use for them, but they’re so coool! I know that some can be found in thermostats, but I’m not sure they can still be bought.
