I have a Dell XPS laptop and every once in a while out of the blue, the screen turns completely white. I unplugged the laptop and closed the lid, when I reopened it the screen is black. Just when the battery dies, the windows logo appears and places the computer in hibernation mode. Upon repowering the system recovers and everything seems to be back to normal.
What do you think? Software or hardware problem?
Standard Intel graphics card
Windows XP
The only other problem is my battery is basically on its last legs, but that shouldn’t matter as long as its plugged in right?
I can offer only an anecdote: when my mother’s monitor began to die, it exhibited this same problem. Shortly after the random white screen it began to show faint black lines whenever the monitor was on. The screen grew progressively paler and paler, until one day it was pretty much just a white screen with black lines. She turned it on one day after that, it gave off a loud POP, and was fully dead.
This may have absolutely nothing in common with your own experience, but if your problems persist and begin to evolve down these same lines, then perhaps you’ll now be able to predict what’s coming. Once the white screens began, the monitor lasted only about another two months.
