Rank the Pixar films from your favorite to least favorite.

This has been done before, but none for at least five years and, also, more movies are out now.

So here are all of the Pixar films in chronological order:

Toy Story
A Bug’s Life
Toy Story 2
Monsters, Inc.
Finding Nemo
The Incredibles
Cars
Ratatouille 2
WALL-E
Up
Toy Story 3
Cars 2
Brave
Monsters University
Inside Out
The Good Dinosaur
How would you rank them, if you were to put the one you liked the most first and went, from there, to the one you like the least being on the bottom?
I’ll leave it to you how to rank any that you haven’t seen before.

My list would be:

Up
Finding Nemo
WALL-E
Inside Out
Toy Story
Toy Story 3
The Incredibles
Brave
Toy Story 2
Monsters, Inc.
Cars
Monsters University
Ratatouille
A Bug’s Life
Cars 2

I have not seen The Good Dinosaur yet.

Pretty much they’re all great until between Monsters Inc and Cars (on my list), where the list drops very sharply.

Very tough to rank some of these - except for the top and bottom 3, most of the middle could be in almost any order, really.

The Incredibles
WALL-E
Finding Nemo
Inside Out
Monsters, Inc.
Ratatouille
Toy Story
Monsters University
Up
Toy Story 3
Brave
Toy Story 2
A Bug’s Life
Cars
Cars 2

Not had a chance to see The Good Dinosaur yet.

The Incredibles
Up
Finding Nemo
Toy Story
Cars
Monsters, Inc.
Inside Out
WALL-E
Toy Story 2
Toy Story 3
A Bug’s Life
Ratatouille
Monsters University
Cars 2

I haven’t seen Brave or The Good Dinosaur, so I didn’t rank them. Inside Out could possibly rise up the list with additional viewings.

Monsters, Inc.
The Incredibles
WALL-E
Up
Inside Out
Toy Story
Ratatouille
Toy Story 3
Toy Story 2
Cars
Finding Nemo
– everything above this is a great movie —
Brave
Monsters University
Cars 2

I left out:
The Good Dinosaur
A Bug’s Life

I haven’t seen Dinosaur and I don’t remember Bug well enough to rank it.

I polled my daughter on the subject, and decided to present both of our rankings.

Her list:

  1. Up
  2. Inside Out
  3. Finding Nemo
  4. Toy Story 3
  5. The Good Dinosaur
  6. Monsters University
  7. The Incredibles
  8. Toy Story 2
  9. Brave
  10. Ratatouille
  11. Monsters, Inc.
  12. Toy Story
  13. WALL-E
  14. A Bug’s Life
  15. Cars
  16. Cars 2*

My list:

  1. Up
    02 The Incredibles
  2. Finding Nemo
  3. Toy Story 3
  4. Ratatouille
  5. WALL-E
  6. Monsters, Inc.
  7. A Bug’s Life
  8. Brave
  9. Toy Story 2
  10. Toy Story
  11. Inside Out
  12. Monsters University
  13. The Good Dinosaur **
  14. Cars
  15. Cars 2 **

It probably says something about Cars that I prefer a movie I haven’t even seen over it.

*She hasn’t actually seen this.
**I haven’t actually seen these.

  1. The Incredibles
  2. Ratatouille

Then all these 7 are ranked about equally:

  1. WALL-E

  2. Toy Story

  3. Up

  4. Brave

  5. Finding Nemo

  6. Inside Out

  7. Monsters, Inc.

  8. A Bug’s Life

  9. Cars

  10. Toy Story 2

  11. Toy Story 3

  12. Monsters University

  13. Cars 2

Not seen yet:
The Good Dinosaur

1> The Incredibles

2> Finding Nemo

3> Toy Story

4> Wall-E

5> Inside Out

6> Toy Story 2 & 3

8> Monsters Inc

9> Cars

10> Up

11> Brave

12> A Bugs Life

13> Ratatouille

99> Cars 2

Have not seen Monsters University or The Good Dinosaur

The gap between number 1 and number 13 isn’t really all that much… especially between Monsters Inc->Ratatouille which is basically a tie… but if I had to rank them it’d go like I did. But the gap between Ratatouille and that steaming pile that is Cars 2 is enormous… so I’ve left plenty of room to leave Cars 2 in last place for awhile.

Inside Out has potential to supplant Wall-E when i get a chance to see it again.

Wall-E number 1, Cars 2 bottom

Of those that I have seen:

The Incredibles
Ratatouille
WALL-E
Toy Story
A Bug’s Life
Up

The first 2 probably change order by whim. They are the only ones that, if they were on TV tonight, I would think about watching them again. Up is rated so poorly because I was interrupted while watching it and simply couldn’t be bothered watching what remained although I had been enjoying it up until the interruption.

The ones I’ve seen (and can remember clearly enough to rank):

The Incredibles
Brave
Monsters Inc
Toy Story
A Bug’s Life
Wall-E
Up (Most overrated movie in the list…though quite good.)
Toy Story 3
Cars 2 (actually, surprisingly entertaining, at least if you’re stuck on a ferry dock)

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Toy Story 2, but I remember nothing about it. Ditto Ratatouille.

I intend to see Inside Out eventually, but haven’t yet.

I’ve no intention to undo my ignorance of the others.

I am lumping the Toy Story movies in a group, because I like them all about the same, and they keep swapping around in order for different reasons. My fave has always been Finding Nemo, and nothing has beaten that yet, it’s the one I’ve watched most often.

Unlike the rest of humanity*, though, I really did not like Inside Out. Sure I cried where it was mandated by the rules of “Manipulative Screenplay Writing 101” but the plot frustrated me by its complete disregard of internal logic, so despite some moments working okay, it really deserves nothing but my contempt.

Finding Nemo
Toy Story
Toy Story 2
Toy Story 3
Ratatouille
The Incredibles
WALL-E
Up
Brave
Monsters, Inc.
Cars
A Bug’s Life
Monsters University
Cars 2
Inside Out

I haven’t seen The Good Dinosaur yet, it comes out here after Christmas. I’m not looking that forward to it, though.

*I also like the Cars movies more than anyone, so I’m a bit weird.

Monsters, Inc.
Toy Story
Up
Toy Story 2
Inside Out
Toy Story 3
WALL-E
The Incredibles
Ratatouille
Monsters University
Finding Nemo
Cars
Never saw:
A Bug’s Life
Cars 2
Brave
The Good Dinosaur

I do wonder why A Bugs life gets so little love. Cars and Cars 2 (not seen Planes) are clearly substandard movies, but Bugs life was pretty good. Certainly better than the recent drop in quality.

Toy Story 2
Up
Toy Story
A Bug’s Life
Toy Story 3
Monsters, Inc.
The Incredibles
Ratatouille
Monsters University
Inside Out
Finding Nemo
WALL-E
Brave
Cars 2
Cars

The Incredibles
Toy Story 2
Toy Story
Up
Toy Story 3
Finding Nemo
A Bug’s Life
Monsters Inc.
Cars
Ratatouille

Haven’t seen the others.

Up (This might be the only movie to ever make me cry again upon re-watching it.)
Toy Story
Toy Story 3
Toy Story 2 (I have trouble remembering which is which, but I think this is my preferred order)
WALL-E
The Incredibles
Finding Nemo
Brave
Monsters, Inc.
A Bug’s Life
Monsters University
Cars (way, way down the list)

Haven’t seen (and what am I waiting for?)
Inside Out
The Good Dinosaur
Ratatouille 2 - I didn’t even know this existed.

Haven’t seen (and it will probably stay that way like the last two Star Wars prequels)
Cars 2

I may have ruined Cars for my then-girlfriend when:

I tried to make it more interesting by pointing out trivia about each of the featured cars. When they introduced Doc Hudson, I told her about Hudson’s success in Nascar in the 1950’s. As I was saying it, we both figured out the rest of the plot pretty quickly.

This didn’t improve either of our opinions of of the movie.

That’s one of the things I’m finding interesting about these lists, the placement of Cars. I liked it, in part because they went to the effort to get so many unusual details of car culture correct. And much of it looks fantastic; Radiator Springs once it’s cleaned up and the neon lights are on, and the Coyote-Roadrunner/John-Ford/Monument-Valley backdrops.

I should see Planes for the same reason, to find out if they slipped in the same sort of inside jokes that only pilots would get.

My list would be grouped more or less like this:

Toy Story
The Incredibles
Finding Nemo
Monsters, Inc.
Toy Story 2

Ratatouille
A Bug’s Life
Up
WALL-E
Inside Out
Toy Story 3

Brave
Cars 2
Monsters University
Cars
The Good Dinosaur*

*I have not seen this yet, but based on excerpts I have seen, it would belong in the last group.

I am another outlier in that I found Inside Out to be a bit overtly manipulative. I found it a little too “gooey”.

Toy Story (Second movie I ever saw in theaters, the first was The Lion King, of course, it was as amazing to me then as it is now and is one of my favorite movies.)
The Incredibles
Ratatouille
Toy Story 3 (I could barely keep it together when I saw this in theaters.)
Toy Story 2
Finding Nemo
Up
WALL-E
Brave
A Bug’s Life
Cars
Monsters, Inc.

I’ve only seen parts of Inside Out but I liked what I saw. I need to sit down and watch it.

Haven’t seen:
Cars 2
Monsters University
The Good Dinosaur

Of the ones I’ve seen:

1: The Incredibles
2: Toy Story 3
3: Toy Story
4: Toy Story 2
5: Inside Out
6: WALL-E
7: Ratatouille
8: Monsters, Inc.
9: Finding Nemo

I mean to see, but haven’t gotten around to yet:

Up
Brave

I have no particular interest in, but might watch with a friend or relative:

A Bug’s Life
Monsters University
The Good Dinosaur

Probably wouldn’t bother with at all:

Cars
Cars 2

The first five on my list I consider all great movies, and could shift around a bit depending on my mood (though Incredibles is still probably #1). #6, WALL-E, I consider a very good movie. 7-9 were all decent, worth the price of a ticket or rental. Beyond that, of course, I’m just guessing.

Of those I’ve seen:
Inside Out
Up
The Incredibles
Ratatouille
Toy Story 2
Toy Story
Toy Story 3
WALL-E
Finding Nemo
Brave
A Bug’s Life
Monsters, Inc.
Cars

And I’ll add Aardman, who have been far more consistent:
The Pirates! Band of Misfits (aka Pirates! An Adventure with Scientists)
Arthur Christmas
Chicken Run
Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were Rabbit
Shaun the Sheep Movie
Flushed Away.
