Rant, Write, and Boo (July Mini-Rants)

If they were stale greens, I would agree (and also ease off the gas). But these idiots were slowing so far back that instead the light sensor thought “oh all the traffic is gone, time to let the other side go!”

I’m a bit guilty of this for a different reason. I drive a small car and if there’s a big truck in front of me I can’t always see the traffic light unless I back off a bit.

Fair enough. I had to learn to back down our driveway because of the neighborhood kids. I work on call and need to leave post haste when my phone rings. I don’t need to cream a kiddo on my way to work.

Gross, I could not figure out where are all the flies were coming from inside, we killed about a dozen, and they kept showing up in twos and threes. About the same time I noticed an odor in a pantry where I store the cat food. I thought it was the bag of dry food but it smelled fine and looked fine.
A few days go by
Then the flies disappeared but the smell was getting worse in the pantry. WTH. I rummaged about a bit didn’t see any mildew on the household items I keep there or on the walls.

There was a box of canned cat food, a pack of 36 that was about half gone. I decided to empty the box and discovered the source of the stink. Horrifying. One can had a crack in the flip top lid and there were dozens of dead black maggots covering it along with some live ones and pupae in the bottom of the box. How did I not notice flies zooming out of the cupboard when I opened it? I’m assuming that putrid can was the source of the flies. Probably was already a breeding site when I brought it home.

Smell is gone no more flies.

@chela :scream: That is horrifying! Happy to hear you discovered this and got it taken care of.

My Garmin watch has died twice today. The first time I was able to reset it once I got back home & plugged it in; after a few seconds it came back on & showed a 69% charge level (so clearly it wasn’t a dead battery issue. The second time I tried two different charge cables in the car - nothing! & then a third cable when I got home which appears to have worked but now I’m not trusting it, & I’ve ‘lost’ thousands of steps I took today.

We went to a car show this morning. There were some cars there that were not in the show; while quite worthy, the owners either didn't want to pay to be in it, or preferred parking in the shade or, perhaps some other reason. There were three cars that were not in the show parked in a grassy triangle underneath a couple of big trees. The newest of them was a Porsche 944, which is *at least* 35 years old, the others were a Cobra & an old MG, which showed up later. We walked past there again & there's some red (as in from a bottle, not a natural human color, skimpily dressed & heavily tattooed & pierced girl leaning all over this car with a photographer & assistant/another girl holding a light. Hey, it's her car, I think, she can do what she wants. Nope, it becomes obvious in walking that they were just 'borrowing' that car for her photos. Nope! The rule at car shows is look but don't touch; even more than life in general. It wasn't my car so I didn't get involved but I can absolutely tell you it if was mine I would have ripped them a new one from stem to stern, & given how she was dressed, probably even called the law for a vandalism charge. You don't put your metal ass body all over someone else's collectible car possibly scratching the paint.

“Life, uh, finds a way.”

I fell again this morning; first time in months. Got out of bed and headed for the bathroom room, and suddenly my legs crumbled under me. I tried using my walker to pull myself upright, but just couldn’t get my legs under me. Finally gave up and used my medic alert button to call for help. When the police(!) and EMTs showed up they hoisted me up to sit on the bed, and after assuring them that I had not hit my head and was feeling okay they allowed me to sign off on being taken to the hospital. They did stay while I got off the bed and headed to the bathroom.

My physical therapist is already coming over this afternoon, so I’m sure we’ll talk about this.

Uh oh… hopefully it’s a minor blip… :crossed_fingers:

Today my CEO sent me an email about a grant application due July 30th. I replied I would take care of it.

Then for reasons I don’t understand she put it on my calendar. So it’s on my calendar twice now. Because of course I already put deadlines on my fucking calendar.

Then she emailed again. “Actually, this is due tomorrow at noon.”

I am utterly swamped right now with a federal grant**, and I have a training thing tomorrow, so I had to drop all the other urgent things to do this urgent thing.

It’s done, but I don’t have a whole hell of a lot of time left in my day now.

This whole calendar thing is part of my general chafing about how involved in grants my CEO feels the need to be. Previous CEOs were only looped in for federal grants. She keeps forwarding me emails about deadlines I’ve already had on my calendar for months. She forwards me every state funder email and they email allll the time. I have told her before that I receive everything she does, but she seems to have forgotten. So half my fucking inbox is duplicate emails.

**“I will write the narrative for you,” the program director says. When I finally get the narrative, I’m pleasantly surprised it’s 7 pages long (max is 10 pages.) Oh, nevermind, this is almost entirely made up of short bullet points.

Somehow I have to write the narrative, enter in the budget, and write the budget narrative, all this week.

Which is why I said two weeks ago, “This is too short of notice to get it done by the deadline.”

“No, no, it’s cool. I’ll do it for you.”

And here we are.

So sorry to hear about this. It is indeed possible that it was a one-time atypical event and hopefully won’t happen again any time soon. But glad to hear that your medic alert worked just as it should! I’m mobility-impaired to some extent and probably should have one, but I don’t.

Weather news from the Great White North, the Land of Ice & Snow. Tomorrow will likely hit a record 100°F or more. I don’t recall ever experiencing three-digit temperatures before. With the humidity factored in, the “feels-like” humidex reading will be equivalent to around 113°F.

I was planning to make oven-baked sausages tomorrow – just perfect: my oven fighting with the A/C in record heat while nuclear generating stations go into overdrive to try to keep up with power demands! So instead I’ll bake them tonight in the relative cool of the night when the temperature is less than that on the surface of the sun, and just nuke them tomorrow.

Or just throw 'em out on the pavement tomorrow …

My blood pressure is low today (it was fine yesterday) so I’m monitoring it. The PT reported it to my doctor’s office, and I got a call back this afternoon to see how I was doing.

I would definitely recommend getting a medic alert button if you have mobility issues. I have one from Baywatch and it has come in handy several times. I think it’s well worth the $45/month it costs. I also have a lockbox on my front door so the EMTs don’t have to break down the door to get to me.

Phew - I was worried for your front door. Is it remotely opened by your medic alert company?

The lockbox has a four digit code, which Baywatch gives to the EMTs so they can open it to get the key inside. Oddly enough, this morning for some reason they had trouble getting it open, which had never happened before. I was in the bedroom and I could hear the rattling of the box. I called out to let them know I was inside. I really didn’t want to have to crawl from the bedroom to the front door.

Your medic alert is from “Baywatch”; does that mean that people coming to your rescue run in slow motion?

No, they move at a normal pace. And, to my disappointment, none of them are ever Pamela Anderson in a bikini.

Now, that’s just false advertising right there.

She’s almost old enough to need the service herself at this point.
