Rep. Hal Rogers - D. I had lunch with Rep. Rogers several years ago, and the presence of many NO SMOKING signs in the building did not keep him from lighting up a cigar. If I were an obese Caucasian male member of Congress in an expensive-looking but out-of-style suit, I would not smoke cigars, for the same reason I’d give up donuts if I were a cop and I gave up golf when I became a doctor. Don’t be a stereotype. He only gets a D because he’s done a lot for eastern Kentucky, but he’s mostly unremarkable.

Hal Rogers is a decent guy and a decent congressman. I give him a C+

What do you think of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors?

Only moved to SF a few months ago, and I admit I haven’t paid much attention. I suspect, however, that in time the answer to your question will be “I prefer not to.”

Sen. John Warner – B. Has done a reasonably good job on the Armed Services Committee

Sen George Allen – C+. Panders to the Religious Right too much, but generally good otherwise.

Rep Tom Davis – B. Good workaday Congressman, had done a good job with DC-oversight and civil service issues.

Gov. Tim Kaine – No Grade. Waiting to see what he comes up with for fixing the NoVA transportation mess (a more equitable distribution of state funds, or just more feeding of the beast that eats in NoVA and is milked downstate?)

that of Gwen Moore(D) F- - - - - - - - - - - -!!

I feel your pain, jsgoddess. I, too, am a Buckeye Stater.

U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine - The chronologically younger but, in Senate seniority terms, more senior senator. Meh. Not much to say. He’s done some good work for historic preservation, which I like, but he’s a pretty doctrinaire conservative on most issues, which pleases me not. He also rarely, if ever, responds to my letters on various national issues. Big surprise there. D

U.S. Sen. George Voinovich - He did good things as mayor of this fair city; not so much as governor. He’s a deficit hawk and independent thinker on his best days; on his worst, he’s content to go along with whatever the Bush Administration wants. He responds to my letters more often than DeWine, but only to tell me what I already know about the issues, and never to take a stand. C+

Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones - My former boss when she was county prosecutor. Bright and friendly; reliably liberal on just about every issue; but completely powerless in Congress today (and even more so after being one of those challenging Bush’s 2004 electors). B+

My state senator and my state representative are both mainstream Democrats, palpably eager for higher office. They’re OK, I guess. B+
