Razors (ladies!)

I bought some razors, somewhat cheaply, goodnews ones. They were always good before. Well, no. I hacked the heck out of my skin. Ladies, please recommend me a Good razor brand which will be smooth, yet do a good job. Thanks.

I use a double edge safety razor. It’s as safe as any disposable razor, and the blades are so cheap that they are practically free–which means I always have a fresh blade. And always having a fresh blade is the key to a good close shave.

My wife stole my Fusion razor to do some landscaping and I never got it back. That should tell you something.

I went from a Venus to a Mach3. It’s far superior to any woman’s razor that I’ve ever used. So yeah, a Mach3. Or a Fusion, if it’s cheaper.

I’ve used a Mach3 for ages. (The man kind - I don’t know if they have a pink one.) Great razor. The boyfriend keeps trying to get me to try his safety razors but they scare me. (He USED to try to get me to try shaving with his straight razor, so that’s an improvement.)

I’m another that uses “men’s” razors, usually Mach3 or Fusion. My SO is looking at getting a safety razor, and I’m thinking about trying it when he does. We’re lucky to have a store nearby that’s dedicated to shaving and is full of knowledgeable staff we can discuss our options with.

If you go to the antique store you can get a perfectly good safety razor that you’ll pass down to the grandkids for ten bucks or so. Don’t buy a new one!

Oh, and don’t use the blades you can get at Walgreens - they’re crap. Try Feather brand, or there are a few others you can order that are good. Not the Gillette ones. (The boyfriend makes a hobby out of shaving, which I thought was annoying until this week when he bought a ventriloquist’s dummy. I am encouraging him to work on his shaving some more and bury the dummy in the yard.)

My favorite is the Schick Intuition for sensitive skin. It’s the kind with a big chunk of moisturizer sitting right at the blade, so I can shave in the shower and not have to use any sort of shaving cream or gel. I also have a Venus Vibrance that I like. The vibrating aspect of a razor actually does seem to help, but I wish my Vibrance had the Intuition’s moisturizer.

Another “men’s” Mach 3 fan here. And I’ve found, rather than expensive shaving creams or gels, that a touch of hair conditioner makes a fantastic and cheap shaving lubricant.

Yep, I only use men’s razors. I have never cut myself with them, and used to cut myself with women’s all the time. Last time I want to do in certain very important and sensitive areas! Right now I use Gilette Fusion. Expensive, but I find each razor head is usable for a very long time.

Are razors like a lot of products which are divided by gender where the female version is pretty much the same but more expensive or less durable?

I second Manda JO and sofia’s suggestion. Also, you can clean them easily and dip them in rubbing alcohol (I understand it’s mainly humidity that blunts blades). I find this make the blades last longer.

Try Ebay. Especially for the blades which can be dirt cheap.

Mens razor, 5 bladed, and soap. If I have to really hack it back then with gel shaving cream.

Yes.

Hair conditioner or some foamy cheap shaving cream like Barbasol or Gillete is the best I’ve found. The gels just gum up the razor.

They are expensive as hell, but I’m addicted to the Intuition for my legs. It’s not so great at the, uh, close up work. But for your legs it just slides on by, needs no additional shaving cream, is good after one pass, and never ever cuts. It makes shaving my legs take literally seconds.

I like the Intuition as well, except that the refills are ridiculously expensive. That’s also what keeps me from buying any of the men’s razors.

I settle for Bic Soleil - triple blades, sturdy, easily maneuverable, cheerful colors. The cheaper triple-bladed disposables have cut me up as the OP mentioned.

Wow! Thanks to **MichaelEmouse **for recommending eBay for less expensive Intuition refills. Just checked it!

Another vote for the Intuition here. I second everything** even sven** said.

Another Intuition gal. I usually shower at the Y, so I like having something that’s all in one, and incredibly fast. I might be able to use conditioner and a regular razor, but the Intuition can’t be beat for speed. Unless the hair is really long, I don’t even have to rinse it between swipes. After tying myself in knots over cost and trying to find a frugal hair removal approach, I just decided the ease and lack of stress is well worth the money.

My SO swears by this razor - and the new one vibrates more noticeably than the older one and seems to do a better job - on shaving, that’s what I mean of course.

edit - sorry mach 3 fans - I just checked and it’s a Gillette fusion.

I’m really fond of the men’s Schick Quattro – I got a bag full of them during some giveaway back when I was in college. I also like the Schick Silk Effects razor.
