friedo hit this one on the head, but I’d like to say that the idea that men are at the mercy of their libidos is one of those under-handed societal memes that works in favor of men who harass or abuse women sexually - “it isn’t OUR fault!” Sure it is. You’re a human being. You have willpower. Use it.
Anyway, I’m in college, and while no one I know (that I know of, anyway) does this, it would neither surprise nor particularly alarm me if lots of kids here were, though I would be alarmed if they weren’t being cautious and careful about it. As many of them probably aren’t.
By the same token, I highly doubt that this is really all that common. There are lots of other ways to make money for school. And there aren’t really that many strip-clubs within walking or bussing distance, so…
I think it’s mostly BS. In my home town newspaper, they occassionaly print an extended crime blotter report (or whatever it’s called). Usually, it states who was arrested, where, and the charge, and the time and date it occurred. Sometimes, it’s larger, and it includes details: BAC level, amount/type of drugs involved, etc. The prostitution ones always had me scratching my head: it was always around $20-$50 for a sex act. This makes me think that the girls are doing it for hits of drugs rather than tuition. Again, I have no idea what percentage of the street workers are compared to the high class stuff, but given what I know of economics, the Moonlight Bunny Ranch model is the exception rather than the rule.
One of my college classmates did it. She had one special client that she liked to refer to as her “sugar daddy”, who provided most of the $$ - however, he would pass her around to his friends as well.
I’m not in college anymore, but I remember those days well and I can completely understand why a college student would hook or strip for money. When you have a job you work at 15 hours a week for 5 or 6 dollars an hour in a small college town and there is nothing else out there because there are 4,000 other college students all looking for jobs and you are standing in the store debating how much ramen you can eat without getting scurvy, finding ANY way to make more money doesn’t seem so bad. Heck, if I were thinner I would be a stripper right now, even though I have a “respectable” job. Earning in a week what I currently earn in a month and being able to afford health insurance would be incentive enough for me.
If only the gender roles were reversed and it was women paying men for sex in respectable numbers, you bet your sweet ass I’d be a hooker right now. Hell, a year at the Bunny Ranch could easily put me through college. Even making a modest 500 bucks a day (not at all unheard of for Nevada hookers) that’d be 150 grand. A few years of that and I could literally retire while still in my twenties.
Well, this wasn’t exactly a female college student, but:
From 1984 to 1987 we lived on a very small isalnd in the Pacific (Kwajalein). There were a lot of families there like us, and there were a lot more bachelors living in singles quarters (barracks, basically). Any, most of the bachelors were men and so the horny single guys far outweighed the available horny single women. Get the picture?
One girl left the island at 18 to go off to college stateside. There being a little lag in her mail getting forwarded, some of her bank statements went to her former address on Kwaj. The parent opened them. Seems said gal had over $20,000 in a Bank of Hawaii savings account.
??? (the parental units went)
Turns out, the gal was making up her own investment fund from, ah, *investments * made by the bachelors to, and in, her. So to speak.
(Yeah, I know, 20 grand isn’t a fortune, but if you’re 18, going on a partial scholarship, with the rest paid by mom and dad, it’s a pretty good nest egg!)
I used to work with a woman who had previously been employed as a receptionist at a brothel. In parts of Australia brothels have long been legal and they are strictly controlled, in fact shares in some are available on the stock market - www.boardroom.com will give you an idea of how swish some of these places are. She told me that largely the staff in brothels are charming, intelligent women. All the brothels ban drug use (by staff and patrons) and like in any other part of life the women with likable personalities were the most popular. She insisted that university students often worked there and even in one case an American with 2 degrees doing post graduate work.
Mind you I don’t imagine that the illegal street prostitute clan involves many students.
Not unheard of. I’ve had several former students become strippers and go to college during the day. They never had to take out student loans, always had a newish car, and never did drugs as far as I ever knew. One of them is a nurse now.
In the safety of (relative) anonymity, I’ll admit to having done it a handful of times during college. It was pretty lucrative, I made $400 an hour, and it was the easiest money I’ve ever made. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it, but it’s all good if you’re super-picky and very careful.
One of my ex-girlfriends paid part of her tuition and living expenses with Exotic Dancing (read: private strip shows). I knew two other women in university who partially supported themselves through stripping and escorting. I didn’t know any students who were outright prostitutes, though.
