Why is it that so many strippers are “putting themselves through school”? I swear, to listen to these girls it sounds like the last song of the night every night is “Pomp and Circumstance.”
Can it be true? I’m sure there’s the odd case here and there, but are there really legions of degreed professionals out there who once humped brass poles for sweaty dollar bills inserted in their G-strings? I just don’t buy it. Strippers that claim they are putting themselves through school are much more likely to be lying or fooling themselves.
Not really. At least not from what I’ve seen. I’ve had a good friend, and an acquaintance who both did just that. They stopped stripping once they finished school.
I am not a stripper (out of respect for my fellow human beings. You’re welcome :)), but my guess is that the excuse may be a defense mechanism to help them rationalize and justify their choice of professions, and deal with the stigma that comes with being a stripper.
Sort of an “end justifies the means” kind of thing.
No experience with this one, but I suspect, as with all things having to do with interations between the sexes where money is involved, there is some truth and some deception. Some truly are putting themselves through school and some are saying what they think you want to hear to increase tips…
Just a WAG on my part, but it is the human condition…
It happens. I haven’t been to a strip club (or in college) for probably 17 years but at least back then it was not uncommon. From the girls I talked to (and I even had classes with some of them). Some stopped when they graduated. Some stopped when they got another job. Some dropped out of school because they made such good money dancing.
College is traditionally viewed as the period in life when people can “experiment” with wilder aspects of life like sex and drugs. The attitude is often that what happens during the college years are not part of the rest of your life. So I’d speculate that women who wouldn’t dance nude for a long term career might be willing to do so for extra money while they’re in school.
Adn the money is undoubtedly a factor. The difference between making $200 in a 40 hour week as a waitress and $200 in a six hour night as a stripper is probably a deciding factor with many women.
It certainly does happen - I knew a few girls at my small private hoity toity women’s college who indeed danced at the Cheetah and made tons of money doing it. There was a perhaps apocryphal story “a few years back” of somebody’s Junior League mama finding out about it.
The school I went to had a huge endowment and almost nobody would have needed the cash for tuition, but if you wanted a new car or just spending money and you looked good enough to do it, it could be very lucrative for you. Not an easy job, though - somebody compared it to being a bartender, having to be “on” all the time.
I know no female strippers but of the male strippers I know one was/is putting himself through college (he’s going to be a teacher), one put himself through massage school and plans to continue stripping while he builds a massage clientele, one is attempting to build a career as an adult print/video model and the others (including the model) are for the most part prostitutes who use stripping as a way to meet potential clients. Whether any of the whores are also students I don’t know.
In one acting class I took a few years back, two of the women in it were stripping to pay for school, and actively recruiting one of the other students…
Considering how many “gentlemen’s clubs” there are, and how many women each one must hire to fill day and night shifts seven days a week (and keep the customers interested), and that most of these women are probably under 25, and that they can make hundreds of dollars a shift (maybe much more, if you believe the HBO series from last year), and on top of that they have their days free, it wouldn’t surprise me if most strippers are in school. “In school” doesn’t have to mean getting a Ph.D. from MIT. They could be finishing a degree, taking word processing at a junior college, studying cosmetology, getting a real estate license, etc. (For better or worse, almost every vocational activity seems to require “school.”) On top of that most strippers are only dancing without their knickers. Again, if you believe the HBO series and other reports, most don’t have sex with customers, although a big part of the act is pretending to be interested in balding, middle-aged conventioneers. They are selling a sexual illusion.
All things considered, I’m surprised that more cute college girls AREN’T strippers.
