Re-Open Closed Tab (Windows 10? 11? Whatever's current)

I frequently load up a whole bunch of windows before settling down to read. Then I pick and choose among them, reading in the order of interest to me, and kill the tab after I’m done with it.

Problem is, I not infrequently close the wrong window.

I swear, up until a few days ago, all I had to do was right click the little plus sign at the end of my string of tabs and I’d get a little menu that included “Reopen closed tab.” Perfect!

A couple days ago I noticed it didn’t work. Right clicking does nothing. Left clicking gets you a new window, no helpful menu.

Did I somehow switch something off? Did one of those out-of-my-control updates that seem to happen every month or so ‘improve’ it out of existence? Why???

Or did they just move it elsewhere?

Help me, Obi wan!

Are you talking about Windows or a browser like Chrome or Firefox?

Are you using Chrome? Don’t click the plus sign. Click to the right of it in the “blank” part of the top bar where all the tabs live. Anywhere between the plus button and the minimize button.

If you’re using Edge, you should still be able to click the plus sign as before.

Right click the plus sign, then choose reopen closed tab from the drop down menu.

Control-shift-T might also work. But yeah, it’s going to depend on what browser you’re using.

I use ctrl shift t in Firefox and Edge.

Works in Chrome, too.

Oh, silly me. Yes, I am talking about Chrome.

Aha! A left click does nothing, but a right click gets me what I need! (I swear I’ve been clicking on the plus sign for months, something was changed by SOMEONE evil.)

Thanks so much! And to the rest of all of you, though I doubt I’ll remember that alt-shift-T or whatever it is. My memory is leaky.

Okay, so I got curious and poked around on the Chrome screen some more. On the same line we’ve been discussing, all the way to the left before the first tab, is a down pointing arrow (i.e. v shape) that I never noticed before.

If I click on it, a drop down appears with a list of all the currently existing tabs and then a break, “Recently closed tabs”, and then the eight most recently closed tabs!

And clicking on any of those closed tabs reopens it! IOW, exactly what I wanted to do! Has that always been true? Why does no one tell me these things?

Yeah, yeah. RTFM. But I never got one. /whining

Clicking on the Firefox logo on the left of that line also give you a choice of recently closed tabs.

I never knew any of this was possible. Now I know three ways (in Firefox). Right click on the +; click on the Firefox icon on the left; ctl-shift-t.

Ctrl-Shift-T might be my most used shortcut. It’s essential if you work with many open tabs like the OP and me.

The OneTab extension is really handy. You can make up collections of various tabs, all in clickable lists. It is very easy to use and saves a pile of memory. If you make up a group at the start of each session it doesn’t matter what you delete just open them off OneTab as you use them.

Allright, so how about a recently closed window in Firefox?

Well if it was one particular tab/website you could look in History (Ctrl H)–unless it was Incognito mode which doesn’t save history.

I think that’s pretty recent. I’ve noticed it, but never bothered to click on it before.

Answered above:

Ctl-shft-T also works in Firefox.

I do know that, so I was hoping for a keystroke solution.

Besides, that’s inefficient if the window had half a dozen - or two dozen - tabs.

Ctl-shift-T is a keystroke solution, unless I’m missing something.
