Re-opening the Nominations - weirdest music video

As I recall there was a night where they played all 18 (not 17) videos one right after another.

Radiohead’s Paranoid Android cartoon has to be hard to beat. Or understand. Or sit through.

New Order - “True Faith”.

What do I win?

Naah, Rubber Johnny

I disagree: that is a short film with background music, not a music video. And I think Come To Daddy is not only a better song, the video is weirder
imo.

Fair enough. I don’t draw a real distinction when the group is involved in the making (this is my favourite), but YMVaried, and that’s OK. I agree *Daddy *is the better song, though.

Lou Reed was the first person I thought of when I saw the thread title, but I was going to mention the video where he tears his own face off, revealing the robot underneath (sorry, I can’t remember the song title, just the imagery).

I’m sure there are never, weirder choices, but I haven’t watched any music videos in probably twenty years.

The more I thought about this, the more I was convinced that my initial reaction was wrong; I can’t really delineate where the line falls to seperate the two forms. Hell, AFAIC, the Beatles Yellow Submarine is technically jut a bunch of music videos with some other bits to make it seem like a coherent story.

I withdraw my objection to the nomination (but I still think Come To Daddy is wierder).

Tool…Stinkfist

Bonnie Tyler’s video for Total Eclipse of the Heart should easily make the Top Ten List of Ridiculousness. It’s set in a boy’s school and seems just thrown together without regard for the lyrics or meaning of the song. There are some weird bright eyes and turning around so maybe that is the tie-in.

It did, of course, inspire an outstanding parody so maybe that’s not all bad.

Hmm, there’s a lot of odd cartoon videos out there in recent years. Ty Segall - Californian Hills has a narrative of some sort, but damned if I know what it is. That it has the sickest direct into the board tones ever recorded goes a long way, though.

Lightning Bolt - The Metal East just decides to be the most awesomely incomprehensible kid’s show of awesome, and goes with it. Plus, it’s a Lightning Bolt video. The music behind it lends a lot to it’s oddness. Just glorious.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Hot Wax and Rattlesnake- damned if I know what they’re doing to that live acton video, but it’s pretty disturbing. The computer graphics in both are pretty great on a “wow, that’s basic, but works” on a really prog rock/psych level. Plus, vibro-slap abuse.

You’re more interested in live action? Peaches may be up your alley - Diddle My Skittle. No, I have no real idea of what’s going on there. What can you do with ball bearings and tights?

Similarly, Thee Oh Sees - Toe Cutter - Thumb Buster. Where will you stop covering up your shame, and will you be the casualty of someone else covering up theirs?

Huh, I never noticed the T-Rex shadow behind the Roman guys playing chess before.

I’m going to give an honorable mention to “Black Hole Sun” from Soundgarden. (RIP, Chris)

Soft Cell’s Tainted love

The singer ignores the woman and sings the song to a little girl

Pat Benatar , Shadows of the Night. She plays a WW II fighter pilot .
