Reading the paper while driving.

I remember bitching about this in the past, and then I see another guy reading the paper in the morning while driving the other day. I cannot believe this still goes on. This isn’t a rant though, so no BBQ. I’m more interested to find why one would need information so quickly that they would risk such a thing?. It makes me nervous to take my eyes off the road for seconds at a time. Even while navigating roads with a map, I’ll pull over and memorize checkpoints in my route for the next several miles, I don’t read it like a book and drive at the same time.

It might as well be the obituaries.

I have to admit I used to do this.

A friend called my attention to the possible danger when he saw me with the newspaper wrapped over the steering wheel and a bowl of cereal on the seat next to me.

Yes I would read, eat cereal, fiddle with the radio and drive at the same time.

I don’t do that anymore.

There used to be reports of a woman playing the violin while driving the DC Beltway!

I used to work out past O’Hare Airport and live in NW Indiana. On holiday weekends, the airport traffic was so horrendous it would occasionally take me almost 4 hours to get home. I much preferred a book over the paper as I would finish the paper with travel time to spare.

A few days ago I saw someone talking on one cell phone while texting on another one. Of course, it was on the freeway at 65 mph.

Guilty!

I live in Northern Virginia, which is (I think) third-worst for traffic in the country. I don’t like newspapers, though, because they’re too big and clumsy. Usually I check CNN and the Washington Post on my Crackberry. I don’t do anything when the car is actually moving, but I need something to distract me when I move 20 feet in 5 minutes. Sitting still for seven and a half hours, then sitting in traffic for another hour to go 7 miles, really pisses me off.

I really should just download some audiobooks for my iPod or something.

Your fellow travellers would much prefer it.

I once saw a guy playing a harmonica while driving. I kind of wished he had the window open so we could all enjoy it.

I heard a call-in show some years ago about things people had seen drivers doing on the D.C. Beltway, and I think the winner was a woman who was folding laundry while driving down the road.

I seen a guy with drumsticks going nuts on his steering wheel like he was Neil Peart or somethin’.

Last Friday I was driving next to a guy who did that at every light. He had a jazz station playing and was drumming out a really fast “ten-to-two” rhythm with one hand while doing various riffs with the other.

But, when the light changed he quickly tossed the sticks aside and drove properly.

I thought it was really cool
