An interesting aside: The term “chad” for the confetti-like substance that comes out of a cardpunch actually derives from its own opposite. Sometime in the early part of this century, a guy named Dr. Chadless invented a keypunch machine that DIDN’T leave any confetti behind (it made a u-shaped cut and folded back the tab instead). At the time, there was no name for the confetti.
But obviously, if the “Chadless Key Punch” didn’t make them, then the stuff a regular keypunch made must be “Chad”!
Explication of such retronyms, tracer, makes me gruntled!

Really? According to this article at the SNOPES, the explanation is somewhat different.
