Real Housewives of OC/Lake Havasu

I’m watching the episode from July 4 where the skanks and their families went to Lake Havasu. The footage shows a lot of people who should know better doing keg stands, shots, etc. On top of this, there are scenes of people standing in the water in a channel where the boats are practically on top of each other. All I can think is that people are pissing like racehorses in standing water and are too drunk or stupid to understand what they’re doing.

So my questions are:

  1. Is this an accurate representation of Lake Havasu?
  2. Is it as much of a dump as it looks like?

I haven’t seen the TV show but if it showed a ton of boats on a sandbar with women walking around topless and tons of drunk people, then yep, that is Havasu.

At Havasu there is the sand bar. You go up the river a bit, IIRC, to get there. A bunch of people beach/anchor their boats at the sand bar and drink. A reasonable number of the women walk around topless. It is a bit crazy, but fun. When we go to Havasu we usually spend the afternoons at the sand bar people watching. I don’t drink, so I don’t end up as one of the drunken idiots, but there are usually lots of drunken idiots. Last time I was there I saw one drunk guy with the worst sun burn I have ever seen. I imagine he had to go to the hospital afterwards.

The sandbar and surrounding lake isn’t a dump. It is actually quite nice. Too many boats to wake board or ski much but it is a fun place to hang out.

  1. Yes
  2. Yes
In all fairness, though, it’s the SoCal trash that makes it so.

Think of a tepid, man-made lake in the middle of the desert. Then think of idiots with too much time and money on their hands partying, pissing and fucking all over the place.

And that’s an improvement over the local population. Meth isn’t made from magic, people.

My parents used to live in Lake Havasu City…back before it became a feeding ground for drunk college age boaters on weekends and holidays. I have been there probably 20 times over the years. I can remember when there were only two stop lights in the entire town!

It has a kitchy “London” theme based around the London Bridge that was sent over and re-assembled, then water was sent under it to make the idea of having a bridge somewhat practical. There is a rumor that when it was bought they were thinking it was the “Tower Bridge”, but many deny that - although I wouldn’t be surprised if it were true. McCulloch (sp?) was the Grand Poobah back in the day who decided to turn the city into a resort and bought the bridge…coincidentally, he also owned most of the land and, well, he made a nice buck off the deal.

The population used to be mostly retired people with a few houseboats…and then it was “discovered” as a party place and rest is sad history. Shortly before my parents moved away, they said that locals pretty much avoided going anywhere near the river/lake on weekends, and that insane party people were being arrested right and left all over the place on weekends.

I do have a student who moved there and tried living there, full time, for about a year until he realized he was about 60 years too young to live there during the week and he moved here to Las Vegas. I still have some distant family who live there and, as far as I know, during the week it is still a sleepy retirement community…but come the weekend…all bets off.

Thanks–being from New England, I had no idea of how realistic the portrayal was…

I’m still revolted by the people just standing around in the water getting plastered…
