Really basic Twitter question

I’ve never used Twitter before, but I’ve decided that I would like to set up an account for my business. Sign-up looks simple - name, email, username, password. Except it won’t actually let me enter my whole name. I can’t be the only Twitter user with a long name, and since my business name is based on my real name, I don’t want to cut part of it out. I looked through their help section but didn’t see anything relevant, and as far as I could tell the only way to ask an individual question is via Twitter.

How is your name displayed on a Twitter account? Is there a way to get a longer name entered (note I’m asking about my actual name and not the username, as my business name should fit comfortably within the allotted length)?

As far as I can work out, Twitter names (both user names and actual names) are just 20 characters long, and there’s no way to extend them. I don’t know what people with names longer than 20 characters do, sorry.

As for how it displays on the screen, that depends on the Twitter client being used. The Twitter.com website displays the username in bold, and the actual name to the right of it in grey text. Keep in mind, every Twitter client is different, and I don’t think more than maybe 20% of Twitter users use the actual Twitter.com website.

  1. Go to www.twitter.com.
  2. Do a search on a celebrity (i.e. Stephen Colbert, Bill Gates, Jay Leno, etc.).
  3. Look at the results to see how people’s names are displayed.
