Really!?

I suspect that this is a result of having listened to the Zimmerman trial closing arguments, where the defense especially used the term “Really!?” approximately 700 Thousand Times!

Has this term just recently made it out of the junior high schools and into the main stream, or is it just me? Should I be expecting Obama’s next speech to feature a refrain of “Really!?”

“Vladimir Putin has accepted the asylum request of Edward Snowden, Really!? I mean, Really!?”

If MLK were alive today, would his Trayvon Martin speech feature conduplicatio using the theme: Really!?

Obviously not worthy of a pitting, but I’ve noticed it creeping in more and more. Next we’ll be hearing SCOTUS rulings featuring OMG!

“OMG! By seeking to displace this protection and treating those persons as living in marriages less respected than others, the federal statute is in violation of the Fifth Amendment, I mean, Really!?”

It wasn’t already a thing due to the recurring SNL “really” skit?

Fer sure! Like, oh my god!

Totes fo realz, yo.

Really? Yep, really.

I hadn’t seen the SNL bit, but thanks for the heads up; I needed the laugh.

My point is that that bit is meant to be funny. In the Zimmerman closings (I heard the defense use it more, but both camps said it at least twice) we’re talking about a dead teen and a man facing serious prison time… But, in defense of the defense, it worked.

My teenage son can deploy the sarcastic “Really?” to devastating effect. I’m strongly opposed to any further spreading of the phrase, including into courtrooms.
