"Realtime" Diplomacy, who's in?

so just to check - do we have seven?

No, I’m now looking at the 18th.

Shame.

What about Wikkit’s offer?

otherwise 18th is fine with me.

Apparently I don’t count.

1099 is still dead in the water too, and I’m in Dip withdrawl. The guy on the corner is charging me $150 a pop to stab him in the back.

Wikkit, can you fill in this Friday night at 8?

Yep.

1099 should be sorted shortly. I’ll be setting a new deadline for the next turn in a minute (relatively speaking of course).

I’m game for this one whenever. 4th or 18th but I’d have to push it to 8:30 EST since I’d be working till 5 my time.

Wait, that still leave us 1 short.

We need a seventh, or we could play with just 6, the odd country(Austria, I think)'s units play under civil disorder rules.

If it waits until the 18th, I should be able to join in. My bro’ is in town (having zero interest in Diplomacy) and might not appreciate being completely ignored.

Can I still find out the channel it’s on, or room or whatever, as I might be able to visit and heckle a little bit.

either option is fine with me

Dave-

I sent off a note to Manus Hand who runs the DP Judge. If it can handle 15 minute turns we only need 7 and the software takes care of the adjudication for us.

For those coming in late the DPJudge is a web-based adjudication package that allows 7 players to have their turns adjudicated by software. It requires strict adherence to order conventions but that’s not hard once you get used to it.

That might be better. What do you think? I asked him if it could handle 15 minute turns and 5 minute retreats and winters.

I’ll let you know what he says.

Waiting is fine with me, or even getting kicked out altogether if the original people can all do it on the 18th.

OK, the DPJudge can handle those turn limitations. If you play instead of GM we can do it.

What do you think, Dave?

Hey, Baby Kate may have pink eye (from the looks of it). I’m going to be hard to reach for a day or so.

I think most of us already use Judge-viable notation as it is, JC. I know I always have, just based on how you taught me to submit orders for 983.

Fine, I’ll play then. I know jack about how to use this web based adjudication software, though.

Here’s the plan. My AIM name is Weirdddave-note the extra “d”. I would like all of you to give me your AIM names either here or by email. Friday night, I’ll create a room and invite all of you into it. The room will be for general chatting, we can each IM each other privately as well. The format of this adjudication software is something I’ll have to find out about, Nate, can you enlighten me? I’ll form the dip room at about 7:45 and anyone who wants to observe and make bon mots can IM me to join as well. I think that’s about it.

Sounds good to me - i’ll download AIM when i get home tonight.

To the best of my knowledge my order writing is pretty tight, but it would be useful to know exactly what the judge can and can’t handle.

My AIM is whitelightninggg.

The Judge is exceedingly easy to use. You can submit orders by email or through the web interface, using the format we’re pretty used to, and it makes it very simple and straightforward. You can also send press through the Judge system but if we’re using AIM that won’t be necessary.

Here’s an example of what a game looks like with the map and everything.

The Judge FAQ is here.

I’m sure JC has more experience with it and more detailed knowledge. If there are any specific questions I can probably help at least somewhat.

You gotta work on that stutter, Lightnin’.

I know diddly over squat about setting up the Judge. But I do know Manus Hand who wrote that bad boy. I’m at the library right now (no fooling) so I can’t check. You want to look at it Lightnin’?

I’ll have to d/l AIM when I get home, too.

Check what, specifically? Most common questions should be answered at the FAQ.

The main FAQ (same as above).

The interface FAQ.

The orders syntax/format FAQ (!).

The interface FAQ is a little dense but covers everything about setting up the game. If you guys want me to be the one to do that since I’ve used the Judge before (played one game), I’d be happy to. You’ll all have to register on the Judge and sign yourselves up for the game using email though. I could specifically instruct everyone on exactly how to do that if necessary. Probably not tonight, unless we’re definitely playing tomorrow. Your in with Manus might be more useful than my limited experience, JC.
I wasn’t surprised to find that ‘whitelightning’ was taken. I was tired of various underscores, dots and dashes as a solution to this perennial problem so I just added letters. Unfortunately ‘whitelightningg’ was taken so I had to go to drastic measures to get the name. I’ve had it for at least a couple years now so I’m used to it.

Oh, and for y’all who need to download it: AIM homepage. Some AOL popups will come up, but don’t worry, the AIM dl is traditionally pretty clean. Personally I don’t like the latest version and never upgraded to version 5 but that’s just me.
