Last Night (7/14/08) there was a tragic accident involving a close friend that I witnessed.

I think the term “accident” should reserved for something that wasn’t inevitable. Drunk teens playing with cars is going to end in tears. It’s like calling the end of a game of Russian Roulette a “tragic accident”.
Your friend was acting like an idiot and the best that can be said is that he didn’t take any innocent lives out with him. It’s a shame you didn’t (or couldn’t) .slap some sense into him before he got behind the wheel.
In my little corner of the world, there are four or five places where there are sad, weathered wreaths by the side of the road – places that no driver should ever have even swerved, much less manage to kill themselves. Each one represents a place where some teenager thought that the laws of physics didn’t apply to them.
I appreciate and respect all replies, whether commonsense or condolences. I basically made this thread here to prevent more useless namecalling and fingerpointing on the “news” comments page.
Color me confused. How is a thread here going to have any impact on comments made to a newspaper article in your local paper? Or is there another Dope thread about the accident?

I hope not. We just dealt with a particularly big case like this in the DC area, and I don’t have a lot of sympathy for people who endanger others by screwing around.
I could say lots of things about this, but all I will say is sorry for your loss. That is truly tragic.

I don’t want to stop you from grieving about your friend or prevent you or anybody from weighing in on the topic, but inviting other people to come over here and fight it out was ill-considered and against our rules.
