There was a Marvel comic published about a year, maybe two years at most, ago.
Th’ problem is? I can’t remember anything about it.
It was a mini-series. The star was a young female reporter (for the Bugle, maybe?) who ran around in a big, ankle length puffy white parka/coat. I do remember liking it though.
Well, geez, I’m glad I can help, Fenris, but – you can’t go around worshipping me when I idolize YOU. I mean, that’s just screwing up my whole anonymous internet slavish hero worship value system, man. Knock it off already.
W-wait. YOU have the comics in your basement already but the only reason you haven’t read them is because you didn’t remember the title? What, do you have a secret comic book sub-basement (the Silver Surfer chamber) or something? Geez, I’ll bet you DO.
Heh…kinda. Don’t forget that when I started reading comics, it was the mid-'70s and I started working in a comic store as a flunky for half-cash/half store credit and kept doing it until I went to college. And comics were much cheaper then. MUCH cheaper–JLofA #1 cost me $55.00 (and boy did I get bawled out for blowing that much on a comic book), and Giant Size X-Men #1 (I didn’t get into X-Men until just before the Phoenix thing) set me back $25? $30? I got about 60-80 long-boxes of comics give-or-take. I do not have a complete Silver Surfer though! And they’re just in a regular basement. And unlike Comic Book Guy, I don’t obsess over whether Aquaman is marrying a girl without gills, nor (unlike him) do I dress like Superbaby. Other than that, yeah!
Regarding Deadline, I actually had read them when they came out. Rereading The Pulse reminded me of them for some reason (as it turns out, the character “Kat” in The Pulse is the character with the silly looking puffy parka in Deadline) but I had a “on the tip of my tongue” type block about it. I’d have had to dig through each damned box to try to find it…which would have been a pain (although since Marvel’s current comics are about a 1/8th of an inch shorter than their old stuff or DC’s books, it wouldn’t have been as bad as if it was some series from the '80s. But it still woulda been a pain.
As an aside, the series is excellent–Guy “Sandman Mystery Theater” Davis does the art (for some reason, he’s drawing Betty Brant as an Asian. But if you get past that, it’s wonderful) and the story (By some guy I’ve never heard of named “Bill Roseman”) is pretty strong. I’d recommend the collection, actually.
I’ll definitely take your recommendation and buy the Deadline tpb next free paycheck.
As for the rest… (Askia looks at his pitieous collection of five long boxes and six short boxes and one and a half bookshelves of various trade paperbacks and DC digests and desperately reminds himself: “Size doesn’t matter, size doesn’t matter…”)
Roseman is in Marvel’s Marketing department. He didn’t really write very much before “Deadline”, other than working on a Captain America book. Here’s an interview with him by Comic Book News, if you’re interested.
I highly recommend Deadline as well. It was a great “normal person’s-eye view” of a city full of superheroes, in the tradition of Marvel’s Alias and DC’s Starman. Kat Farrell was an engaging heroine and a great new character (a cute redheaded reporter who wears glasses and rides a Vespa scooter? Yes, please!), and the series featured some gorgeous new Guy Davis artwork and attractive Greg Horn covers that he didn’t just trace from porno mags. The TPB is a good buy, so please let us know what you think!
