OK, I know it’s odd to have recipe requests here, but from what I understand it’s the proper forum. If not, please move.
I had dinner last night at Joe’s Crab Shack and I had a “Melon Shaker”. It was about an 8oz shaker containing crushed ice, Skyy Blue vodka, Midori, Grenadine, and OJ. Any ideas on the proportions of these items to make this drink? It was SO GOOD and I’d like to recreate them at home in my take-home shaker. I seem to recall the waiter quickly running down the ingredients and saying “1 1/2oz of Skyy Blue Vodka”. Would the brand be important, do you think? Does Skyy Blue have some different flavor then others?
Wow, that does sound good, I’m a Midori fan ~grins~
From what I understand about alcohol, every brand is going to have a slightly different taste, so I would say that brand name is important. You certainly shouldn’t try to substitute honeydew liquor for Midori (and call it a Midori sour, which has been done to me before!).
If it was 8 oz, you can experiment a bit, but bartendering is rather tricky. I was taught to tend bar by counting how long I held the bottle up…(I also was the favorite bartender by our regular customers, I tended to have a heavy hand.) Get a spout (the hooked thing the bartenders use) and I would say a shot or three (depending on how well you can tolerate it) worth of vodka, a shot of Midori, shot of grenadine, fill with orange juice and blend.
I found a recipe for their Ya Ya Punch, might be useful since it had a few of the same ingredients, and might tell you how much their bartenders usually put in similar drinks:
Ya Ya Punch:
8 ounces pineapple juice
8 ounces cranberry juice
1 1/2 ounces vodka
1 1/2 ounces peach schnapps
1 1/2 ounces coconut rum
1 dash grenadine
Based on that, I would modify my above statement to say:
8 oz. OJ
1 1/2 oz. vodka
1 1/2 oz. Midori
1 dash of grenadine
Blend with ice
Skyy vodka comes in those nice blue bottles, but I don’t believe is actually blue. I don’t think they have different flavors either, but I haven’t been to a liquor store in a while.
Also, Midori is a lot more expensive than other green-colored melon liqueurs, but people contend it makes a difference.
Big Bad Voodoo Lou (wow that’s hard to type, like a tongue twister for your fingers!), it does make a difference, I swear…even the color is completely different. The honey-dew liqueurs (I spelled it right this time) are weak and don’t even really have a melon flavor.
I’ll stop posting in this thread soon, I’m beginning to feel like a stalker…or an alcoholic.
