Recommend a good online RPG for a 10 yo?

My son is enthralled with RPGs at the moment. We’re looking for good RPGs, online, which are suitable for a 10 year old. We’re trying to stick to the age restrictions, but we’ll look at “teen” rated games if the rating is really just silliness IYO. I’m really trying to restrict the violence. Also his exposure to the online bullying and meanness that seems to happen with some games. He was heartbroken when he tried some servers with Minecraft and people griefed his stuff.

Wishlist:

  1. RPG
  2. Multi-player in the same house
  3. Online
  4. Good story
  5. Light on violence and gore

Likes so far in general: Lego, Minecraft, Skylander (all of them), Disney Infinity, Spore, just in case any of that helps with suggestions.

We play D&D offline.

Thank you!

Consider Torchlight and Torchlight 2. They’re both rated T and have blood splatters a-plenty, but it’s very cartoonish, and I believe you can turn off the splatters. Both are available for less than $10 right now on Steam, but if you watch for the over the course of the summer sale, they’re likely to go down in price even further.

I kiiiinda want to say LotRO, (That’s Lord of the Rings Online) but some of the darker areas can have kinda disturbing stuff as part of the decor. Otherwise, the violence is pretty mild - lots of weapons swinging, but no bleeding or anything. It’s free, so it might be worth you poking around in anyway, just to feel it out.

Oh, and the community is generally impossibly nice for an MMO.

It’s not a MMO, but you might consider Borderlands 2. He can play it on his own but it has 4 player co-operative play.

A 10 years old? It has a big red “rated ages 18+” on the Steam store page.

Have you played it? It’s comic-book violence. There’s no sex, no nudity, very little bad language. There’s a modicum of innuendo, but really, the only really offensive things are an occasional reference to cannibalism in one level (the Fridge) (and a 10 yo likely won’t understand those references) and an incidence of human sacrifice in an optional mission.

He liked Minecraft - why not set up a server of your own, if you have a spare computer lying around? Nobody needs to have access to it that you don’t vet.

I’ve not played it, but this parent review makes it sound like not what the OP is asking for, I think. Note especially the OP’s statement that “I’m really trying to restrict the violence.”

Yes, I have. Unlike you, I also read the OP.

Yeah, that’s a big no on the Borderlands.

What about a Final Fantasy game? It’s been years since I’ve played one, but IIRC they haven’t changed much and really just have turn based “Kiiyyaaahh!” and call it a day.

Oh hey, what about Kingdom Hearts? It’s got fighting (but not terrible), Disney, a good story…why not?

ETA: Oh, you said online. Wellp nevermind on that then…sorry I can’t read. But hey, go play Kingdom Hearts

Thank you everyone
