I carry a Victorinox Camper. I’ve carried it, or the similar, if simpler, older styles, for the last…25 years or so?
So did you end up getting a knife?
a two-spring (4-basic tools plus your tweezors and toothpick) should suffice for a city denizen.
My husband loves his SOG Stingraythat I got him for Christmas. I carry a Spyderco Ladybug on my keyring.
YES!
Magiver in post #18 speaks of the Axis lock licensed by Benchmade from William-McHenry. This is the finest lock on the market.
The Benchmade Griptilian series knives are probably the best knives on the market when all things are considered, from price, blade material, heat treatment, blade geometry, smoothness of opening and closing, lock ease of use, lock strength, lock tightness, ambidextrous, handle shape, etc.
There are specially commissioned versions of the Griptilian knives. Cabela’s has an exclusive and excellent D2 steel version in both full sizeand mini size, and Doug Ritter sells his exclusive S30V flat-grind blade version, the Ritter RSK Mk1. My buddy has the Cabela’s full size Griptilian, and I have had a Ritter Mini-RSK Mk1 plain edge since 2004.
With my Wicked Edge USA sharpener, I have put edges on both Griptilians so sharp I can whittle a human hair. The D2 is more prone to rusting than the S30V, but I was able to put a finer diamond paste honed edge on the D2.
You will not regret a Griptilian.
But,
The difference AIUI is a bit of complex metallurgy,
The chromium in D-2 isn’t “free” to do this.
So, don’t be scared of D-2!
In fact, just because it’s stainless steel doesn’t mean it can’t rust, my Onion Mini-Task has a couple of tiny rust spots from being in my pocket . . . and it’s ATS-34!
CMC fnord!
I love my Opinel knives. Dirt cheap, but excellent steel. The only real problem is that the wooden handles tend to swell and jam the action of the blade.
I carry (and am lost without) a Victorinox Classic SD. One blade, one nail file cum screwdriver, and one pair of nail scissors. Is 2¼ inches long, so small you hardly know you’re carrying it.
On-line it’s listed at $18.50, but I got mine sort of out of the back of a station wagon from a guy who had a box of them that he said came from the confiscated knives bin at SeaTac Airport. Think it cost me around 50 cents.
Well, ATS-34 is really a stain-resistant steel, not a stainless steel. If you keep it clean and dry, it’s pretty good, but I had (I recently gave it to me da) a CRKT S-2 that has in the past had a few tiny spots on it.
The nice thing about the S-2 is that it’s possible to completely disassemble it for cleaning.
I agree with the doper who suggested a http://www.leatherman.com/product/Micra they are a good quality pocket knife.
Ditto on the Victorinox and the Leatherman. I carry both in my purse - each has a ridiculous amount of toys on it (thank you, Divemaster :D) and I use them more than I would’ve thought possible for a woman.
Mr. Horseshoe got a serious case of the WANT when we looked at that site!
His daily carry is a Kershaw Leek, and he loves it partially because of its thinness. He’s had other Onion-designed knives and never been disappointed with those. The Kershaw family previously mentioned (Leek, Scallion, Chive, Shallot … anyone else hungry?) are all good quality, just different sizes depending on what you want. CRKT also has an absolutely phenomenal new knife, also from Ken Onion, called the Ripple - only 5/16" thick, and so smooth it feels like an assisted-opener, though it isn’t - worth checking out.
I used to have one of those. You know, the saw blade can actually saw through a bike lock cable when you’ve locked your mountain bike 8 miles away from civilization. Took forever, though.
Here you go. It comes with 17 blades and you can load it up with as few as 2 or as many as 13 and swap blades in and out as needed. This is a true pocket knife. Things like a Leatherman is a multi-tool and should be considered as being in a different class altogether.

If you just want a small but incredibly beautiful and elegant pocket knife, this is what you should get.
The ultimate Swiss Army knife. The kitchen sink is in there somewhere.
