Recommend a Good Topical Treatment for First-Degree Burns

…with some blistering.

Yesterday, I scalded my right leg between the hip and the knee. I immediately sprayed it with cold water and applied an ice pack for an hour. I now have two quarter-sized patches on my leg where blisters have burst, one intact blister, plus a patch of reddened skin about four inches wide.

What’s the recommended treatment for this type of injury these days?

It’a worked well for boils and cat scratches for me; the reviews say that it’s good for burns too.

Eeeek!

Keep it clean and don’t let friction from pants keep rubbing it.

I think a good antibiotic ointment will help. The painfree antibiotic ointment will work if it is painful. I wouldn’t use a dressing unless it gets infected. Then it’s doctor time.

Good luck.

Burns that large need medical attention. See a doctor if you haven’t already.

Oh, and don’t put any kind of cream on before you go, because if you do, they will have to remove it before they examine you. A light bandage or covering is fine.

If it happened at work, look into worker’s compensation.

Absolutely anecdotal - don’t try this at home!

When I was about 16, I jumped onto the back of a KTM motorcycle as a passenger. I did not realise that the exhaust is on the right side, and pressed my inner thigh onto the very hot exhaust. I was wearing fairly short shorts.

I got a burn roughly a tea cup saucer size.

The owner of the bike took me to her mother. Mum made a paste of water and bicarbonate of soda and applied it to the wound.

It healed, I dont even have a slight scar.

Blistering is an indication of a second degree burn.

Aloe vera gel.

Diclofenac sodium 1% topical ointment is for joint and muscle pain, but it will take away about 80% of sunburn pain. Might be worth trying. It’s also near-miraculous for suppressing itching from mosquito bites or other bugs. You can find it at Walmart, sometimes with the original trade name Voltaren.

True. But the blistering amount comprises about 15% of the total scalded area. So I characterized this it as first degree.

Thanks for that. I can also find it in my bathroom, where I’ve been ignoring it because it’s done fuck-all for the arthritis pain in my thumbs. But I’ll try it on the non-blistered areas of my thigh.

I get off work in half an hour. I’ll find an urgent care for the blisters (which are now a lot uglier than they were yesterday morning).

It’s been plenty effective for my thumbs, and several other parts. Are you letting it dry thoroughly before doing anything else with your hands?

Kayla’s dad, I was kind of horrified that you burned your right leg like that. I wondered how you did that, whether cooking, bathing or some other situation. I think it’s nosy of me to ask but I was very curious while reading your thread.

Yes and I believe blistering is THE characteristic symptom that increments the depth degree value. It makes a big difference because it’s considered an open wound and is a classic foothold for infection. It also means you need to think twice about most topical treatments (sunburn spray, etc) which advise “For external use only” and other wording to contraindicate use on wounds.

Okay, if I need to maintain my sterling reputation for humility by occasionally recounting an incident where I’m a dumbass, so be it.

In 2022, I drove from the OC to Portland to stay with my sister’s family. I brought my cat along, but the family can’t do cats due to allergies. Fortunately, Mila, a BFF of one of my nephews was willing to take Brock to stay with her, her own cat, and her grandmother (eventually we had to re-home Brock, but that’s tangential to this tale).

In late September of 2024, the grandmother had to enter assisted living, and Mila had to find someplace to stay. My sister asked me to let her couch-surf for a while, until Mila could score something from social services (outside of SNAP benefits, that never happened).

So here it is, nearly a year later, and I’m thinking I’ll never live alone again, never be able to walk around my apartment naked. Suddenly, Mila’s dad (also just this side of indigent) gets a new girlfriend. She and her kids hit it off with Mila and they invite her to live with them!

Mila moved out of my apartment last Thursday evening while I was at work. Caloo, callay. On Monday, still reveling in my restored privacy, I entered the kitchen (naked), filled the kettle, and proceeded to boil some water for cup noodles. After pouring the water over the noodles, I tried to place a saucepan lid on top of the cup. This is where my essential tremor came into play. I knocked the cup of boiling water off the counter, splashing my right leg (and narrowly missing my genitalia – phew!).

That’s the narrative. The dumbassery is that I learned more than forty years ago to wear SOMETHING when I’m frying bacon; why wouldn’t the same lesson apply to boiling water?

I’m redder but wiser now. The kitchen is now a no-nudity zone.

I’d go with one of those hydrogel bandages. E.g.:

Ya, well, I’m the one who had to read the story four times before I realized Mila isn’t a cat’s name. I was wondering why/whether you or anyone cared about nudity with cats, lol.

It’s good for me to reciprocate. Last year I had a kitchen near-miss. I was cooking a stir-fry and the oil and water didn’t mix. It was a good thing I wasn’t looking over the edge of the wok when the whole thing blew. Those grease explosions are so crazy.

Have you seen a doctor yet?

Ahh, I had guessed it was cup o’ noodles. They are notorious.

I have a scar on my wrist from grabbing a cup just made to keep a 2yo from grabbing it and pulling it over themselves.

It was like yours about 4in. But it bubbled up quick. Cold water stopped the immediate pain. An ice pack til I could get to urgent care. Within the hour.

Got treated for 2nd degree burn that promptly got infected, even though I was careful. I heal slowly so I had an active boo boo for a couple weeks.

Antibiotics, a couple trips to have it debrided. Dressings. Was not pleasant.

ETA.go to dollar store and get a couple plastic noodle cups. They don’ tip as easily. Safer..some have lids if you wanna save part.

Yes. I went to urgent care on Wednesday morning. The wounds have been cleaned, treated, and dressed. I go back on Friday morning where I’ll be seen again and the dressing changed.

Oh, good. I’m glad to hear you went on in.

Debriding and redressing hurts..Just a warning.
