I’m trying to find a descent remote connection program for a friend but I’m can’t decide which one I should get. Besides Remote Desktop Connection, can you recommend any?

I use UltraVNC.
It’s a variation on VNC which has been popular for a very long time. It’s free, open-source, reasonably fast, has a variety of encryption plugins, supports text chat and even contains it’s own file transfer client, obviating the need for a separate FTP server.
