Recommend Albums like 30 Deg Everywhere

I’ve had this album for several years now, but lately the album I’ve been playing the most is 30º Everywhere, by the Promise Ring.

What other albums have a sound similar to that album? I already have everything else by TPR, and thats a bit too melodic and not really as punk. Not that I mind it, in fact I think they are superior albums, but right now I am in the mood for music that makes me want to jump up and down and scream and go out and make some fucking punk music. (And it has to be melodic, too.)

OTOH, I also have Source Tags and Codes by …and you will know us by the trail of dead, and that’s the most similar album to 3E that I have heard. But it’s a bit too…progressive, if you will (i.e. a lot of tracks are just neverending noise.)

It seems a lot of the ancestors of Promise Ring are like that too…can you recommend anything that’s not too noisy but still melodic and kick ass punk?

It’s kinda hard to give recommendations without knowing what else you’re familiar with. But if you’re not familiar with 'em, check out Coheed and Cambria.

You’re right, it does seem sort of a Gotcha Ya to not reveal what I’m familiar with, then say “oh, no, not that.” I do have In Keeping of Secrets of Interminably Long Album Title by Co & Ca, and to tell the truth, the production values are about what I am looking for (i.e. not too glossy, but not as raw as, say, White Pony by the Deftones.)

I was enthused about getting that album, too, since A Favour House Atlantic seemed like the type of song that no band with that sort of song could put out a bad album, yet, I wasnt impressed with the album, just didnt have very many catchy songs. Are their other albums more filled with catchy hooks and melodies?

I guess I should list what stuff I am familiar with that people may at least have a chance of recommending to me. Stuff I am familiar with already but doesnt really sound like what I’m looking for at the moment (not that it’s bad, I’m just not in the mood for it now:)

– Get up Kids (fun, but not what I’m looking for right now.)
– ditto Saves the Day.
– Flickerstick (they actually score better on the “Melody” aspect of the score than anyone but TPR!, but alas, not punk enough for my temporarily refined tastes.)
– Deftones (actually are produced similarly to this album, but not melodic enough.)
– …and You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, as I said before, Source Tags and Codes is what I’m looking for, in nearly all aspects, and it’s probably second heaviest in my rotation lately (third, for some reason is what are you going to do with your life? by Echo and the Bunnymen, but thats neither here nor there.)
– just to get a few bands that may be lumped in here out of the way: Dashboard, Something Corporate, Weezer, All American Rejects. Like 'em. Not what I’m looking for. (although, did you know that Scott Schoenbeck, yeah, Scott Schoenbeck, is a quasi member of Dashboard now?)

Well, I don’t see anything at all older on your list. You want some punk, you owe it to yourself to check out Rancid, Operation Ivy, Green Day (before Dookie), the Clash, the Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, the Pixies, Husker Du, Fugazi…hell, there’s a lot of stuff. Go to allmusic.com, look up the Promise Ring, and start exploring.

Thanks for the recommendations. Most were already on my “to look at list”, but can’t say I’m familiar with them as I can never find them at the used CD store! I’ll look for the rest, too, as I don’t have any pre-90s punk besides the obvious groups and the Descendants.)
