Recommend an online auction/sales site (not eBay)

Tell me what is a good place to sell stuff online. Not eBay.

Requirements as follows:[ul]
[li] Must be **UK-based or have a UK version **of the site. This is very important. It does me no good if the site you suggest works only in America.[/li][li] Would be nice if foreign buyers could bid on my items too.[/li][li] Should be suitable for selling used goods, mostly cameras, also a few other things such as iPods, games consoles, and so on.[/li][li] Must have a good rate of traffic, where I can expect to sell my items for a good price.[/li][li] Seller fees that are not too high.[/li][li] Preferably has some tool, similar to eBay’s TurboLister, that will allow me to create a bunch of listings offline, and upload them all at once.[/li][li] I’d hope there is some protection for sellers against dishonest, stupid or crazy buyers.[/li][/ul]

Any suggestions?

I have not used it myself, but I have heard very good things about Bonanza (formerly bonanzle). The uk address is

Much better rates than eBay at the very least.

May I suggest you ask a mod to change the title to include the UK angle? That may help call the thread to the attention to your countrymen. Who are the folks most likely to have useful info for you.

Thanks for the suggestioon, Mr. Miskatonic, I’ll check it out.

There’s ebid. Not sure how well it meets your criteria as it’s been a while since I used it. I think traffic/patronage is going to be the shortcoming, but that’s likely to be the case anywhere that isn’t eBay.

In truth, I don’t really understand how so much of the small market was driven away from eBay, but hasn’t really surfaced anywhere else.

Amazon.co.uk? Fixed-priced, country-specific listings, but otherwise meets most of your criteria.

WAG, it did resurface. On Craigslist, Backpage and in Canada on Kijjiji and the UsedEveryWhere sites.

Does stuff on Amazon sell well?

I’ve found that fixed-price listings on eBay sell far less often than auctions.

It works very well for me in the US – I vastly prefer it over eBay – but I don’t know what the UK market is like, specifically.

It’s easier to use mainly because listings are easier to create (Amazon creates the description pages for most products and you just list yours and compete on condition and price)

Thanks, Reply.

Might I ask what sort of things you sell, and how often.

I don’t do much these days, but a few years ago I used to be a small-time seller of books, electronics, DVDs, etc. – stuff already in the Amazon catalog. To be clear, I only sold at most maybe $500 worth of stuff total. It wasn’t a business, just a way for me to get rid of things I no longer needed.

In the US, they have a program that makes it even easier to get rid of things: You can ship them a big box full of your crap, set the prices yourself, and then Amazon takes care of all packing, shipping and returns without any further work on your part. Not sure if something similar exists over there.
