Recommend me a CD burning program for PC

I need a decent CD burning program for my PC (Windows 98). Windows Media Player doesn’t recognize that I have a burner at all for some reason. I used to use a program called SongstoCD which worked okay, but there wasn’t enough functionality to justify the $30 cost once the trial period ran out. (For one thing, I couldn’t get it to stop putting all the Civilization sound files in my music library.)

P.S. Don’t say get a Mac. Already got one but it doesn’t have a burner and I don’t have the money to buy one.

Are you talking free or pay?

The lastest free version of Realplayer says it can burn. Never tried it though.

I use nero express myself. It came with my burner. Burns DVD’s and CD-r’s.

A free version of Real(anything) is still overpriced. AVOID!!
Nero does a pretty good job.

Another vote for Nero. I ran the older version on the 98 box-have the newest version on the XP box, and it is sweet. No copyright protection issues for your backups of important software.

I like the newest version of realplayer as a dvd player. It works very well. Even plays MP4’s.

I love the theater view.

Nero is great i’ve been using it for years with no complaints, it is also only about $10-15 on ebay.

I also used Nero to create bootable Linux CDs. I don’t think that’s a standard feature with a lot of the other burners.

There are quite a few freeware burning tools around. I haven’t used any of them myself, but i’ve heard good reports from people who have. You might need to check about Win98 compatability, however.

BurnAtOnce
dBpoweramp CD Writer

I’ve made over 30,000 CDs with Roxio Easy CD Creator, formerly Adaptec Easy CD Creator. It handles any format and/or sampling rate and will convert it to CD format on the fly. The only downside is that now it’s 2 CDs of bloatware that includes a DVD video editing suite. See if you can find Version 5 Platinum. That was the best of the lot before they got ambitious for useless features, and it was designed for Win98.

The best freeware CD/DVD burner app I’ve used is CDBurnerXP Pro which, despite the name, can also be run on Win98 or WinME (shudder) platforms. It duplicates many of the functions plus the look and feel of Nero without the pricetag.

I downloaded CDBurnerXP Pro and it promptly crashed my computer when I ran it. Nero Express (which, as it turns out, came with my burner too) doesn’t like WMA files, so I downloaded and installed the plugin from their website, and it still doesn’t like WMA files. sigh I’ll keep trying, eventually I’ll get something right.

Another Nero vote here. I’ve found that it’s the most intuitive of the programs I’ve used.

I’ll second every word of this (and the shudder over WinME).
