Recommend me a sleeper sofa!

oft wears hats and I are looking into getting a sleeper sofa. It is vitally important that the bed actually be comfortable to sleep on, and not one of those miserable metal sadness frames that’s like a thorough beating delivered in sleep form. Dopers, do you have any recommendations?

Check out this made in america manufacturer

American Leather

I have one from there and can say the sofabeds truly are comfortable

Another vote for American Leather. I have three of them! Very comfortable to sleep on and to sit on.

All I can tell you is I’m not helping you move it no matter how much pizza and beer you give me. They are damn heavy and awkward.

My mom has a sleeper sofa that I spent a week sleeping on last year when I visited. It was pretty comfy. It was an air mattress that had to be inflated each night and deflated each morning. Super easy and I slept well. I can ask her the brand if you’re interested.

Agreed. The best way to do it is to disconnect the metal bedframe from the sofa and move the two parts independently, then reconnect them at the final destination.

Also, jsgoddess, please do!

Oh my, yes! The one and only sleeper sofa I owned was uncomfortable and weighed more than a car.

About twenty years ago, I bought a conventional sofa bed from Jennifer Convertibles, a large chain of sofa bed stores. I bought a fairly expensive one, hoping it would be comfortable but my family who visited never liked it. But just out of college, I used to spend summer weekends visiting a friend on the Jersey shore who had a futon sofa bed in the living room. That was comfortable, but futons make you look like a broke college student.

Still, on some of the home makeover shows on HGTV, I’ve seen things that look like conventional sofas but have a back that can be dropped to lay flat, and make a sleeping surface along with the sofa seat (much like a futon). That type of sofa bed looks like it might be more comfortable, but I don’t know what this style of sofa is called.

She says it is a La-Z-Boy (that’s hard to type) and she thinks it cost something like 1100 dollars with the inflatable/air mattress. Hope this is useful!

So this is a conventional fold-out sofa bed but the mattress is inflatable? I’ve never heard of such a thing.

Yeah, you take off the cushions and unfold it, just like a regular sleeper mattress. It’s like an extremely thin mattress with air pockets on the top, I guess. Then you hook up the pump and inflate it. It takes… um… 30 seconds? Don’t quote me on that. I’m terrible with time estimates. You can choose how firm to make it.

Then you sleep.

In the morning, you pop the valve thing and let it deflate, pushing some of the air out before you fold it back up and put the cushions back on.

I didn’t have any issues sleeping on it at all.

Must be something like this.

It’s very cool, and I imagine a whole light lighter than a regular sofa bed.

Yes, that looks exactly like it.

Isn’t most of the weight in a sleeper sofa from the steel frame? If so, that product doesn’t eliminate that weight.
