I am looking for a place that sells couches or loveseats, where the cushion flips out and you have a bed.
I am not looking for a futon in the traditional sense, as the couches I am talking about are not wooden frames w/a mattress on top. The product looks like a couch.
Any links or stores that definately have these would be appreciated. So, too, would be the currect term for said product.
Cheap place: Salvation Army
Moderate: Sears (Utilitarian and will hold up under, shall we say, passionate use).
Expensive (looks like couch not a pull out): Ethan Allan.
All of 'em will get screwed up eventually though.

“Flip out” couches tend to be about $300 more than a standard non-sleeper model, at least around here. Also, after being sat on for a while, the mattress becomes flat and lumpy, and the framework that holds it up becomes painful to sleep against. If you’re dead set on this setup, I’d recommend also getting an inflatable air mattress for throwing on top for comfort. Otherwise, I’d say just get a plain sofa and an air mattress you can throw on the floor for guests.
Strange, in Calif we call them sofa beds. I have two. Get one with as real a mattress as you can find. $299 for a brand new one from Jennifer Leathers, are on tv all the time.
The matress is more uncomfortable than the floor and the couch is more uncomfortable because of the matress. I agree with Miss Davis air matress takes up very little room when deflated and is much MUCH more comfortable than the Chiropractors Dream (So called cause nothing wrecks my back like a sofa bed!)
there is another kind of flip-out loveseat that you might be referring to. it makes a bed about the size of a double bed, bit smaller than queensize. it is connected, sorta firm cushions that you pull up & out & they lie on the floor when it’s all open, making a firm bed about 10" high.
i got one for my den for $200 at cost plus (an import store), altho i’ve seen them at many stores.
i don’t use it for a sofa every day, so i don’t know just how well it holds up. my son, however, used it for a bed for a yr & never complained & it still looks pretty good.
the name of the store is ‘cost plus’. altho that sounds like some discount store, it isn’t. all kimds of neat stuff. they are in phoenix, but i don’t know where else. may be a website.
i would also try pier 1 (pier 15, i think, in chicago) & tangs. but a big walmart is also a possibiity. i know i have seen single chairs like this at walmart, sofas are possible.
it’s going to be 80 deg. again in phx today. i’ll pass on the trip to chilly mnpls to test the 'love’seat.
I saw a great piece of furniture at my uncle’s house a couple of weeks ago. It looks like a long closet or dresser, but when you open it, abracadabra! a bed pops out.
If you plan to use the sofa bed to sleep in every night, and you want to use it as a regular sofa during the day, If at all possible I would try to dissuade you from buying one. Either the mechanisms on the sofa tend to wear out or the mattress wears out quickly and you will feel as if you are sleeping with a metal bar going across your middle. I know you had stated that you did not want a futon, but trust me they are much more reliable. You can get them with interspring mattresses or a heavy padded foam rubber (most of which are guaranteed not to compress) They come in a variety of styles, and you can buy covers that look just like the upholstery, including matching pillows.
