Recommend Me Good Books on Effective Writing and Public Speaking

A friend, a teacher, wishes to brush up on her public speaking and writing. Now, of course, she knows the basics–what we’re looking for are books that will give her writing and speaking that extra little polish and pizazz.

Now, we’re not looking for dense tomes that would have her writing Thomas Pynchon-like prose, but rather lucid writing that the layman could understand and her peers would appreciate.

Thanks for your suggestions, from me and her.

Probably entirely not what you are looking for, but the only speaches I’ve ever read that I thought to be quite powerful (and jazzy) were those in “Invisible Man” by Ralph Ellison (no, it’s not that book they made into a movie with Chevy Chase. It’s a book about black equality in the 50’s.)

It’s a work of fiction, and potentially the speaches wouldn’t sound as good spoken aloud as they seem on the page, but it is a good read at any rate.
