Recommend me some female-sung metal.

Cool; I’m happy to help.

No idea about Liquid Graveyard; I haven’t followed them since their first album. I thought it was interesting, but it didn’t grab me so much that I had to know what they were up to, so my recollection about the membership could be wrong.

And hey, now that I’ve got a range, this should be fun:

Jex Thoth - Nothing Left To Die - spacy folk doom that really helped set the template for female fronted doom bands (kinda unfortunately)
Jex Thoth - Son Of Yule

Female-fronted doom is practically it’s own genre these days, although it’s generally called occult doom or some such. The trappings of the genre don’t all have to be present of course, and there’s quite a bit of variation within the genre, but commonalities should be pretty apparent when you listen to a few bands like Blood Ceremony, Black Moth, Castle , etc.

If you like that kind of thing, I suggest giving a listen to the band that, IMO, first set down the template, way back in the mid-'80s:

Opal - Magick Power
Opal - Happy Nightmare Baby
Opal - Supernova

Even there, you can hear the influences plain as day; nobody tries to hide it in doom. FFS, it’s why we’re all there in the first place, ya know what I’m sayin’?

Skunk Anansie - The Skank Heads - UK punk-as-fuck rockers; have to be seen live to be believed
Skunk Anansie - Selling Jesus - ddamn I love this band’s first few albums

Curve - Hell Above Water - industrial alt metal
Curve - Chinese Burn

Challenge accepted! What language would you like?

Garmarna - Gamen - Swedish folk dance metal (I’ve posted this on the Dope before)
Garmarna - Varulven - Swedish/Middle Eastern folk dance metal

Seremonia - Kristalliarkki - Finnish retro occult doom/garage/psych rock
Seremonia - Itsemurhaaja

Cycle Sluts From Hell - I Wish You Were A Beer

:stuck_out_tongue:

Haven’t listened to any of the links in this post yet*, but thanks for the keywords to look out for.

  • Just finished the ones in Mister Rik’s post - all good stuff, but the Devilskin does bring up why I like multiple tracks by an artist being posted in threads like this - Never See the Light didn’t impress me, but Little Pills did, which prompted me to listen to another of theirs (Start A Revolution), which also did.

I just remembered another one, Arkona. Couldn’t remember the name earlier. Russian pagan metal. I think this was the first time I actually heard female death growls.

Liki Bessmertnykh Bogov

My last post was kinda rock heavy so I thought I 'd balance it out by posting some more metal:

Ease into things with Necro - Adiante (full album; brand new!) - adventurous Brazilian stoner/doom trio with male & female vocals

Ready to rock now?

Oker - Oker - straight up tight pants-and-leather metal from Spain
Oker - Miedo

Lovebites - Don’t Bite The Dust - speed metal + power metal + J-pop = this awesomeness
Lovebites - Shadowmaker

Once Human - Eye Of Chaos - melodeath band from LA
Once Human - Gravity

Nekrodelerium - Grief - Norwegian black metal; dunno if yer into that
Nekrodelerium - Distorted Device

This might be a bit too much for you, but hey, they’re from Peru!

Vulture - Testigo del Horror - brutal thrash metal
Vulture - Buscando La Salida

I should have provided some links in my other post. Here they are:

Chelsea Wolfe - 16 Psyche Psychidelic dark folk metal.

One-Eyed Doll - Committed Texas metal.

Stolin Babies Second Sleep Avante garde metal.

Draconian - Stellar Tombs Death metal with dueling male/female vocals.

Oceans of Slumber - Suffer the Last Bridge Progressive metal.

Cellar Darling - Black Moon Scandinavian folk pop metal.

iwrestledabearonce - You know that ain’t them dog’s real voices ??? beats me

Heavy Temple is my new obsession. Here’s an EP. It’s more psychedelic than metal though. I’m regretting my dosing days are behind me.

Really digging Witch Mountain,** control-z**

Jenni Skulander has a fantastic set of pipes for metal.

Based on what you’ve said, you could be into Myrkur, female fronted Black metal. Got clean and growled vocals.

I’ve also got a weird one for you: Melt-Banana. May be more hardcore punk than metal, though I think a punk fan would have much the same reaction to them as a metalhead. They’re Japanese but not like BabyMetal at all. The song linked is their modern sound. This is their earlier sound. And they’re also an “acquired taste”, so I’m not expecting you to come back saying they’re your new favourite band. Definitely worth checking out, though.

FTR, I’m not ignoring this thread, but I’ve been catching up on sleep and my TV watching, so I haven’t been able to listen for a while… Thanks for all the recs, anyhow.

Yooooooo

Just heard Brides of Lucifer and they are coooool!

Picture a choir doing metal covers, with the metal still playing. I don’t have the ability to link it right now, but definitely check them out.

Burn in Hell is my favorite

lol what more do you really need?

But, enjoy Within Temptation doing a Kate Bush cover.

Glad to hear it! I listen to them at least once a week. They have had 2 singers, I like the first one better but the new one is great too. They sell their music on BandCamp if you’re into that sort of thing.

Never been much of a metal head, so I hope I don’t look like too much of a dweeb if I were to ask how Evanescence doesn’t belong here. Amy’s not a death metal growler, but the music and overall tone seems to tick a lot of boxes.

I think Evanescence is great, but to me they are more of a goth rock than metal. Same with Lacuna Coil.

Of course Evanescence can seem like metal if your musical tastes are mild.

Not metal per se, but The Paybacks play some balls out gritty Detroit Rock and Roll

check em out!

Dear gawd my world, I guess I need to get out more. My Latino office mate marvels when I struggle with a jalapeno, and now this. Feeling like a colossal pussy lately. Maybe I should just crawl off to my beanbag chair and crank up some Air Supply…

I can say that the reason I didn’t post them is because the OP is already a fan of female-fronted metal so it stands to reason that bands with a couple of decades of recording under their belts would be known already. Plus the OP mentioned Nightwish and In This Moment were not favorites; Evanescence is similar enough to dissuade me from recommending them.

I would second the recommendation of Cellar Darling above, though they are quite inoffensive. However… Hurdy Gurdy!!

All of the members of that band had been long-time members of Eluveitie, which is technically not female-fronted, but features features female vocals an awful lot.

For more folky female fronted metal, I highly recommend Dalriada from Hungary:

Búsirató
Hajdútánc

Then there is Darkestrah, a black metal band originally from Kyrgyzstan, though has since relocated to Germany and replaced their excellent female lead vocalist with a much-less-female German guy (their most recent album is not recommended). However, we will always have Epos and The Great Silk Road.

Well, I happen to like Fireflight and Flyleaf, which are listed as “Alternative Metal” on Wikipedia, but they also do other stuff so I’m not sure that’s going to fit what you’re thinking of.
