So the Tzeroling returned home from her last vacation at Daddy’s a month or so ago with a PlayStation One tucked neatly into her suitcase. (Her older half-brother apparently gave it to her.) It came equipped with a Tiger Woods golf game, Gran Turismo 2, and Sim Theme Park. Big thrills there. So yesterday at Target I picked up Crash Bandicoot 2 just for variety’s sake. It’s… OK.
So, given the fact that I’m hopelessly dinosaurically equipped as far as video game systems are concerned and that I might actually have to spend some time hunting suggested titles down, what are some games that you think might have me saying “just another half hour” to myself at 3:00 AM?
Jet Moto 2 and Twisted Metal 2 are good single player games. JM2 is a racing game that my friends and I spent hours playing and trying to open the oodles of secrets, and TM2 is a great fighting FPS-type game. It’s the only TM game I’ve played, so the others might be a bit better.
Are you looking for games for her or yourself? Platformers such as Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon series tend to be good all around games for all ages.
The fight games (the old streetfighter/mortal kombat games) are pretty fun but may not be age appropriate as are most of the RPG’s that people have suggested. I don’t know how old Tzerolinga is but the RPG’s tend to focus more towards teens/early adults than younger children because the stories are more involved and the puzzles more complex.
For that just another half hour feeling, try Final Fantasy Tactics. For fun that game stands up well even on a play station 2. The BubbleBobble game is great fun on the PS1. Tenchu 1 was a favourite third person run arround-killing things game (though gorey). I’ll second Spyro for an all ages game.
Get the games second hand from the likes of Electronic Boutique stores for best prices, PS1 games are not in very high demmand and should be << $10 except for a few special titles.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a nice platformer. Hm…most of the game I own are imports or already recommened, so that’s no good. Dance Dance Revolution, if you can stand to dance. The Next Tetris is a decent port of that old game, so that’s nice… I hear the first Klonoa is really good, though I’ve only played the GBA one… Not much else I can think of.
Parappa the Rapper. (“Punch! Kick! It’s all in the mind!”)
Point Blank 1 & 2–usually bundled with a lightgun, and well worth it. Unlike the usual lightgun-game of uninspired shooting-on-rails, it’s a collection of goofy shooting gallery fun.
Metal Slug X. It’s a great side-scrolling shooter, goes a mile a minute and never stops. Almost impossible to find new, but a lot of Funco Land (now called Game Stop, I guess) stores carry used copies pretty cheap.
I second on Parappa the Rappa…of course, it only takes an hour to beat, but it’s mighty fun.
I like the Oddworld game (Abe’s Odyssey).
Super Puzzle Fighter Turbo is endless hours of fun (if you like puzzle games)
It’s a nice little spinoff from Super Mario Kart from Nintendo. It uses the characters from Crash Bandicoot to create a quite fun, and good for all ages, cartoon/racing game.
Awright, a list! Yeah, I was kinda looking for games both for myself and for the Tzeroling (who’s 9 going on 16). Looks like I got some good suggestions. I’d totally forgotten about Oddworld, too - that one goes high on my list.
I used to play this game on PS1, it was a side-scrolling space shooter. Rather simple and cheaply done, but I found it incredibly addictive while I was in college. A very good way to pass the time with some friends if there was nothing else to do. I have been trying to find a copy for a while, but I can’t for the life of me remember what the heck it was called. It had a german name, but I don’t remember anything else past what I’ve already posted. Does anybody know what the heck this game was called?
Oh, and Olentzero, Bushido Blade is great 2-player fun. But it’s a little on the bloody side.
