There was a cuddlecore punk trio from Vancouver called Cub that broke up a few years ago. Great stuff, not quite as hard edged as Sleater-Kinney. If you find any other their CDs, snap 'em up.
[sub]Still can’t think of Sleater-Kinney without laughing a bit.[/sub]
Pretty good stuff, KozGuitar! There’s someone that your singer reminds me of more than Gwen Stephani or Kay Hanley, but I can’t figure out who it is.
Bad Hat, I had totally spaced out Patti Smith. Good call!
elfkin, I don’t know if ska fits in your musical tastes, but the Dance Hall Crashers are pretty darn energetic.
maybe?
L7 kicks ass.
d’oh
just remembered that the first PJ Harvey album wasn’t self titled, it was called “Dry”…
How about Jefferson Airplane, say between 1966 and 1970. You’ve got Jorma Kaukonen on guitar and Grace Slick on vocals. That sounds like it would fill the bill.
Actually L7 was exactly who I had in mind when I made the second stipulation. They don’t sound like girls, at all, to me, at least not in any of the singles I’ve heard of theirs. Thanks, though.
Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone!
Jack Off Jill - very heavy guitars, great lyrics, and a very female (and angry) sounding singer. My favorite songs of theirs are ‘American Made’ and ‘Poor Impulse Control’.
Bonnie Raitt. Queen of the slide guitar. Bow down before her.
When they want to, the Indigo Girls can rock pretty hard. Melissa Etheridge does a great Janice Joplin thing.
And for us old-timers, how about Heart?
Caterwaul! Their music is guitar-based rock, and good, but they’re unique mainly because of Betsy Martin’s voice. You’ll either hate it with a passion or love it passionately. It’s kind of high-pitched and little-girlish, but with an edge. The closest approximation I can think of might not help you if you’re not familiar with the reference: think Alison Shaw of the Cranes, only harder.
I’m in the love it passionately camp. My favorite albums are Pin and Web and The Nature of Things. I haven’t yet heard their most recent album.
Here’s their listing at the Ectophile’s Guide to Good Music:

EGGM also has the ability to search by genre, which might help you.
Tilt (Check out ‘Partial Birth’ for some wild drumming)
Discount (Alison Mosshart)
Echobelly (Not as punk as the previous 2)
Dover
Belly and Throwing Muses maybe?
Some Indigo Girls tracks are really rockin’. Especially the ones with Amy Ray on lead. My personal favourite is ‘12,000 Curfews’, a ‘live’ album.
Garbage obviously, a lot of their songs feature guitars. Just not on the latest album.
Superjesus, an Australian band that is NOT religous at all despite their name has heavy guitars and the lead singer has an incredible voice. And is a woman.

Um… how come nobody has mentioned Bikini Kill?
I’ll second Discount and Sleater Kinney.

Apologies if this double posts, my connection’s being screwy.
And a triple! Thank you and goodnight.
You should check out Pucker.
They don’t have a CD out, but you can download their stuff from the above link. I’ve seen them a couple of times, and now I’m a fan.
Download “Starstruck” and you will be hooked.
Le Tigre is a textbook example of the next generation of riotgrrl. Their lyrics are heavy on anarchofeminist dogma but the guitar riffs are catchy, and they pull off some amazingly creative stuff.
Brassy is a brit punk-by-way-of-funky-hip-hop fronted by Muffin Spencer, sister of Jon Spencer. Ballsy stuff.
Snake River Conspiracy is industrialish but still capable of being melodic. The frontwoman, Tobey Torres is a former exotic dancer, IIRC and can scream with the best of 'em. The QuickTime movie file included on their Sonic Jihad CD is worth the price alone.
For more good stuff check of this ilk, check out Radio VH1’s “Rebel Girls” station. Pay no attention to the fact that its associated with VH1. It used to be sonicnet.
<slight hijack> Is that the same band that did the TMBG-covered “New York City”?
I love that song. If I ever play there, I’m doing that song.

I recommend that dog. Their lead singer Anna Waronker (sister to R.E.M.‘s Joey Waronker) just released a new album called Anna. I haven’t heard it, but I hear it’s rockin’.
