Recommend Me Some High Energy (guitar based) Bands With Female Singers

I had to read the posts so far twice to confirm my shocking observation… nobody has yet mentioned Concrete Blonde! They rock.

I also second recommendations for Garbage, Elastica, and Sleater-Kinney.

I wouldn’t describe Concrete Blonde as hi-energy guitar based. ‘Bloodletting’ is one of my favorite albums of all time, an absolute masterpiece IMO, but they don’t fall under the OP’s criteria.

Although all of their material is out of print in the US, Inkubus Sukkubus definitely fits the bill. You can order their stuff through Resurrection Music, a great source for goth/industrial stuff. It’s a bit pricey, and the shipping’s slow, but it was worth it for the two CD’s I got, Wytches and Vampyre Erotica.

Hope this doesn’t double post, but I forgot to mention that they have a page on mp3.com. Go download some stuff (my favorite is the title track off Vampyre Erotica).

If you like blues try Kelly Richie, otherwise I agree with sam stone , except for Heart ( they sound like female to me)

Joan Osborne’s new one rocks pretty good. Let’s see, there’s also Kate Bush though she’s a little “different”. Tori Amos has a few upbeat ones. Patti Rothberg is pretty cool though I don’t think she’s had a second CD out yet.

Damn, where’s Pat Benatar and Heart, maybe I’m just over the hill and don’t know it. There’s still a bunch not mentioned!

Trust me on this one. Mary Prankster. The absolute BEST rock band you’ve never heard of. If you do any of the IM stuff, email me your name and I’ll send you some of her songs. I’ve seen many great Rock and Roll shows, Dead Kennedys, The Who ( 2nd row seets on the floor at RFK stadium in 1995),etc…and Mary in a bistro, solo acustic, blows them all away. She’s so good I duped this post in an email. Check out her website.

Also, I cry SHAME!!! on Jonathan Chance for neglecting to mention the Queen of Cowpunk.

SHAME!! SHAME!!!

Just because she loves me and not you is not reason to get all excited.

Jeez, some people.

Yes, it’s the same Cub that did New York City. I only saw them once, in November of '96 opening for TMBG, and they were fantastic. Shame they broke up, but they put out some great CDs if you can find them.

Joydrop. The Metasexual album is fun. If you wish to try before you buy, email me or get me on ICQ and I’ll send you an mp3 or two.

Well, just because she wrote you a song…
I’m not sure I’d crow about “The World is Full of Bastards”, IYKWIM.

They don’t? Since when? I’d say the Sugarcubes or No Doubt (mentioned earlier in the thread) don’t really apply to the OP’s criteria, but Concrete Blonde could fit in quite well, especially when compared against Veruca Salt.

I wasn’t necessarily thinking of “Bloodletting” however, which is one of their more mellow records. I was thinking more of older Blonde, such as “Free” or “Still in Hollywood.” Some tracks on “Mexican Moon” (my personal favorite Blonde album) would also fit the bill.

Anyway, it was just a suggestion.

Daisy Chainsaw, although they’re broken up now, sounds to me like almost exactly what the OP is requesting. Some of the members (including one-woman moshpit Katie Jane Garside) have reformed into Queen Adeena. I haven’t heard it, but it must be good.

Total agreement on P.J. Harvey. All must bow down.

If your tastes run to thrashy power pop then former 80’s UK band The Primitives are your answer.

I’ll second the Jefferson Airplane vote. (But the 71-72 Airplane is worth a listen to also) Be sure to check out Hey Fredrick from 1969’s Volunteers.

Thanks, JonTheHasher! Glad you liked it!

Now I have to get some time to sit down and check out some of the other stuff being thrown around in here…

Since you asked for guitar playing I submit Warlock/Doro Pesch and Sinergy as bands with female vocals that are pretty heavy. Also if you’re into death metal you can try Arch Enemy but you might have a hard time understanding her. You might also try out Nightwish as the singer there is also an opera singer. All of these bands are heavy if that’s your thing, but they have the guitars that you wanted.

im not sure this fits in ur catagory of music
but
i suggest this one song

Power Symphony - Never Dream of Goodness

it has to be one of the best songs ive heard in a long time.

Daisy Chainsaw is good, I don’t know if it’s readily available these days, but it is fun, noisy, garage-glam. Queen Adreena, with KJG and guitarist Crispin Gray from Daisy Chainsaw, is quite a bit different. Slower and less glam, it misses out on the frenetic thrill ride of its predecessor. Plus, I don’t think it’s available in the US, so investing in it can be expensive. On the whole I found it to be a let-down.

Mmmm, their first album (sigh, currently out of print here in the US) is damn good guitar pop, the comparison to the Buzzcocks is quite apt. Their later stuff failed to live up to the first album and was hit-or-miss-or-miss-or-miss, but dammit, Thru The Flowers is one of the best songs ever recorded.
