Maybe you’ve only heard a limited selection of their stuff. While some of it is a tad raunchy, their last two albums the beauty process: triple platinum and Slap Happy are somewhat more melodic offerings.
Another band in a similar vein, but not as heavy as L7 is a band called Die Cheerleader. I only ever found one album, but it is good.
Dating myself a tad, but three of my favorites are Belly, Mary’s Danish, and Transvision Vamp . All with catchy fantastic guitar and lovely female vocals.
Great googily moogily, and I thought I knew most of what there was to know about female bands, but there are several of these that I’ve never heard of. Off to the obscure CD store I go.
Oh, and if you can find it, pick up the only album from Drill. From soft and sexy to bigger-balls-then-I-have screaming, Lucia is an amazing vocalist. You may have trouble getting your hands on the album, if you’re desperate you can check out the Empire Records soundtrack, they’ve got a song on there. I hear she’s also slumming around with KMFDM these days…
All of you people seem like my kind of people. And that makes me happy to post here.
Well, most of my favorites have been mentioned (the Donnas, Liz Phair, Sleater-Kinney and the Muffs in particular), but I’ll throw out Bratmobile. Good female punk band. Bikini Kill is great, but if you’re looking for a more female-sounding lead singer, check out Bratmobile.
seventies classic rockers “HEART” had some nice hard stuff. you should also look into “THE DONNAS”. chick punk rock. they did a cover of that titanic song. it was really cool.
The Clouds from Australia, broke up by now, but you can find albums on ebay. 2 wailin’ chicks with awsome voices, with two guys backing them. Best track: Bower of Bliss
** The Swansons**. From the east coast, I think. I only have Shake but every track on this disc rocks. Beautiful female voice on vocals.
**Susan Tedeschi, Sue Foley, Patti Rothberg ** are all worth a look also. They are more blue/rock and pop, but all have very strong albums.
and I’ll add Cheri Knight too, but she is more rockabilly/alt country. Even so, her album is one of the best I own.
Welcome to the party, limpy!
May the mediocrity of several greeting-card salesman inhabit your soul like unmatched buttons in a empty mayonaise jar.
As has been previously recommended, Nightwish is a good band with a beautiful sounding vocalist, although the genre is Scandanavian metal. I personally haven’t heard Drill, although a friend of mine got their album from www.half.com recently. However, I have seen Lucia perform live with KMFDM, and she has a great stage persona.
PJHARVEY is a goddess!
Diamanda Galas is a GODDESS!
But the goddess of all goddesses is CARLA BOZULICH!!!
Carla was the lead singer for the ALL TIME GREATEST HEAVY-HARD FEMALE-FRONTED BAND, The Geraldine Fibbers. Go you now and buy BUTCH and be forever changed. She had preciously (nother appropriate typo) PREVIOUSLY fronted Ethyl Meatplow, and now works mostly solo, although sometimes as Scarnella with Nels Cline, the Fibbers’ visionary punk-jazz guitarist. Ask Carla into your heart and be saved.
More big-voiced female goddesses (I swear, this really is my favorite genre: ask Equipoise):
Katell Keinig
Sonic Youth
The Donnas (YAY!)
L7 (L7! L7! L7! that’s really hard to navigate the shit [typo! SHIFT] key around)
SLEATER KINNEY! SLEATER KINNEY! SLEATER KINNEY! SLEATER KINNEY! SLEATER KINNEY! SLEATER KINNEY! SLEATER FUCKING KINNEY!
And someone mentioned Transvision Vamp. Don’t forget the FAB solo album by their lead singer, Wendy James: Now Is Not the Time for Your Tears, with all songs written for her by Declan (Elvis Costello) McManus.
And I LOVE Caterwaul.
And WEIRDDAVE, if you think you know ANYTHING about cowpunk, then you don’t know SHIT about Carla Bozulich.
Glitch: somehow my post (above) didn’t register: it didn’t take the thread back to the top, and two hours later it still showed the previous poster as the last poster. So I’m posting again to legitimately bump it.
I’ll confirm that. He’s been trying to get me into the Geraldine Fibbers for decades. It’s not my style, though I did nearly lose my hearing at one of their concerts once, which should count for at least trying.
I was also going to mention the Muffs (they kick ass), but I see they’ve already been done. You might also look in to the Lunachicks, but they might be a little on the butch-sounding side for your taste. They rock in concert though.
