I had gum surgery a few days ago, and for the next 10 days I have to eat only soft foods. My periodontist has recommended scrambled eggs, macaroni and cheese, yogurt, and applesauce. I have added tuna salad some soups and the doctor says finely ground beef, as in chili, may be okay.
But these things are already cloying, and I’d welcome your suggestions for non-sweet main course-type foods that require little or light chewing, before I go nuts.
Scrambled eggs. I had sinus surgery recently, and these were the most wonderful thing. Didn’t have to chew, just use my tongue to break them up and swallow.
Mashed potatoes, chicken broth, anything that is smooth and requires no chewing.
How about pasta with meat sauce? Brown ground beef and/or bulk sausage, diced onions, bell pepper, and sliced mushrooms. Add chopped garlic when the meat is almost done. Drain off fat. Add a commercial spaghetti sauce (my husband and daughter love Ragu) and heat through. Serve over cooked pasta of any shape. Not at all chewy, and it’s flavorful.
I really, REALLY like Walmart’s version of Slimfast, but that’s sweet, and probably not what you’re looking for.
Lunch or Dinner
Angel hair pasta with a smooth sauce of some kind (plain Ragu, butter and parmesan cheese, white sauce, etc.)
Egg salad
Fish - something soft and flakey, like white fish, salmon or sea bass, etc.
Scallops are soft and mushy
Ravioli
Peanut butter & Jelly on soft white bread without the crust
For non-sweet foods, I’ve been eating a lot of creamy or pureed soups lately–e.g., potato/leek, pea, curried lentil, black bean bisque, and sometimes just beef or chicken broth.
I’d potentially be concerned about this scrubbing scabs a little too thoroughly. I’m still recovering from my tonsillectomy, and as of yesterday overcooked pasta was too much for me. I’d recommend commasense check with the doctor before trying this.
Oh, another possibility would be Indian food such as saag paneer and the like.
When I had gum surgery last spring, I found pasta too gluey and hard to clean out of my mouth after eating; I couldn’t brush my teeth for about two weeks, since I had stitches in several places and a plastic retainer-like plate protecting the roof of my mouth. Things that a gentle swish could rinse out worked best. I lived on tomato soup, pea soup (the smooth, pureed kind without any lumpy split peas or bits of ham or bacon in it), mashed potatoes and gravy, chocolate pudding, applesauce, and after the first few days, bananas.
Do you guys have Ensure or Boost down there? I know it wouldn’t be thrilling to have only those, but they would keep your nutrition up if you couldn’t find anything appetizing that you could eat. They taste pretty good.
last oral surgery i had, i ate a lot of yogurt/ensure/instant breakfast and oatmeal. had a dang near liquod diet for about 3days. then moved up to breads.
