One of the hardest games I ever played for the Genesis, believe it or not, was Beavis and Butt-Head. That game was a cast iron bitch to beat, I kid you not. Funny, too.
One game I remember loving on the Genesis was a strategy/RPG game called Warsong. For its time, it was an amazing game. I loved it.
But it had a GREAT ending if you beat it! I remember being wholly satisfied by it.
That’s a good game, and I totally second as well: Streets of Rage 2 &3 (liked 'em much more than #1), and** Toe Jam and Earl **- Which is in my Top 10 games ever list. It’s just such a great concept of a game that I wish would be done again, but I don’t think anything ever gets as good as that game did.
Also, Zombies Ate my Neighbors is a great 1-2 Player Co-Op shoot-em-up sorta game.
There is also IIRC an adapter that lets you play master system games on the mega drive. If you’re interested i’ll look for some more details on it later, see if I can find out what it was actually called.
I never really played the Master System. I was an Atari child.
When I was a tiny tiny boy, I wanted an Atari more than anything. I used to steal the Sears catalog and flip through all the cool looking Atari games, infuriated that my parents could never afford to buy me a system.
I decided to take the initiative and work for the money. I can’t remember exactly how long it took, but I can tell you it took so long that when the big day finally arrived and my parents took the money I’d saved down to Sears, they had stopped selling Ataris.
I was absolutely devastated… until they presented me with the brand spankin’ new NES they had paid the difference for. I swear, that was the best day of my life - the first genuinely nice thing I remember my parents doing for me, just because they thought I’d earned it. Brings a tear to me eye, it does, arr.
Anyhow, I think so far I’ma star with Streets of Rage 3, Sonic 2 (already on the way), and the Phantasy Star Collection for the Saturn. I plan on snagging a copy of Nights when I get the money as well… that looks like a beautiful game. Word is the Wii version isn’t as fun, which is a shame because it’s way cheaper right now.
Let’s see from my Saturn collection I enjoyed Magic Knights Rayearth (based on an anime but it’s actually a pretty good action/adventure game), Puzzle Fighter (which has been available on multiple platforms but I’ve got a Japanese copy for my Saturn which is where I learned it), and Legend of Oasis. My brother swears by Sonic R but he seems to be the only one.
Here’s some of my favorites for the Genesis:
Landstalker is a great action RPG using an isometric perspective.
Gods is a platform shooting type game, and one of my fav genesis games. Tons of secrets on every level.
Soldier of Fortune is a top down co-op shooter by the guys that did Gods. You can have the AI control the 2nd player, which isn’t as effective. Definitely awesome with 2 people though.
Road Rash (1-3) Everyones favorite motorcyle racing with clubs and bats game.
The Immortal was an adventure game where you played a wizard trying to find his master in a dungeon. Pretty advanced for the time period.
Gauntlet The only one I have is Gauntlet 4, which added some light RPG trappings and fixed mazes. Not sure if the other 3 are available.
Desert Strike, Jungle Strike, and Urban Strike Neat helicopter blow stuff up games. The series carried over for a few games on the PS.
X Men 2: Clone Wars was much better than the first X Men, which I didn’t like.
Spider Man and the X-Men had individual levels for each hero, some of which were quite difficult. Fun game though.
Out of this World Simple but fun platform/adventure game with strong puzzle solving elements. Probably pretty much impossible to find though.
Flashback was the sequel to Out of this World. Awesome game, and still listed as one of my favorite games all time.
Prince of Persia Great side scrolling platformer loaded with traps.
**Shadow of the Beast ** one of the hardest platform games I’ve ever played. Nice graphics for the period, and the game had good music (at least on the Amiga, it’s not as good on the Genesis version).
Shadow of the Beast 2 focused much more on the puzzle elements, so it wasn’t anywhere near as difficult as the first one. Unfortunately it’s rather short (once you know how to solve the puzzles you can beat it in under an hour).
Earthworm Jim 1 & 2 are great, wacky platform games that might be a bit harder to find but would definitely be one of the highlights of any Genesis collection.
Stormlord is a nice platformer with good graphics. It’s slow though, feels like you’re moving underwater. But it’s still cool.
Shadowrun the classic cyberpunk RPG. Highly recommended if you like RPG’s.
Castlevania Bloodlines Not one of the best Castlevania games, but not bad.
Dune 2 may have been one of the very first RTS games ever made.
Light Crusader Action/Adventure somewhat similar to Landstalker.
For the Saturn
Quake, which was an amazing port for the Saturn.
Dark Savior, which was a sequel to Landstalker for the Genesis. You could pick one of 3 or 4 different paths at the beginning, and get different storyline and paths through the game.
btw, I found some stereo A/V cables for my Genesis (they have red, yellow, and white plugs). I noticed that a lot of cables being sold are mono, they just have the yellow and white cable. I’d look for the stereo one if you don’t have it already, sounds a little better than the standard coax port cable.
Definitely check out Sonics 1-3 and Sonic & Knuckles, Vectorman 1 & 2, Streets of Rage 2 (best in the series), Revenge of Shinobi, Rocket Knight Adventures, Comix Zone, X-Men 2, and Aladdin for the Genesis.
The Genesis was my favorite system ever. To this day it’s only rivaled by the Dreamcast and the DS.
There were two endings. The more impressive one required you to beat the dog, who would kill you if you had the wrong object.
It’s one thing to watch the concert, it’s another thing to BE the concert.
This. Best game eva!
Can’t believe I forgot RR. (and *Desert Strike * and co.)
Along a similar line: Boogerman.
