Recommend some good pipes!

Bagpipes, that is. To listen to, not play. Any suggestions as to albums of good bagpiping? Or good pipers I could download a disc’s worth of? Preferably more classic stuff than some indy-rock group with a piper, but that could be interesting too.

Interesting, I was just recently considering getting a set and learning to play. I figure they are probably pretty expensive, though.

Whoops! I guess you won’t be needing this link.

My bad.

The band was called Clandestine, and I just finished recommending them in another thread. Their webpage is www.io.com/clandestine, and you can still get their albums. Not just a pipe band, but very traditional and with some great pipe work.

The “More Music from Braveheart” soundtrack has numerous tracks added to it performed by the Pipes and Drums of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders.

There are plenty of pipe band albums out there, I recommend looking for compilations from actual Scottish regiments such as the afore-mentioned Cameron Highlanders, the Black Watch, the Gordon Highlanders, etc…

Lots of good band links here: http://www.khpb.org/links/ . The Keith Highlanders Pipe Band is an excellent pipe band, but they don’t seem to have any albums available - pity…but their links page is chock full of stuff for you to explore, and you’re sure to find some music to add to your collection.

Whoops - the URL for Clandestine is www.io.com/clandestine - I accidentally got a comma included in the address on my first attempt.

Perhaps these people could help.

If you’d like something a little more rustic/traditional than the usual pipe band stuff, I highly recommend Out of the Flames by Matt Seattle, available from Discipline Global Mobile.

Just a sidenote: The instrument is, I believe, technically called “a bagpipe” even though it has plural pipes.

I have no suggestions for your actual question, though.

Depends on how specific you’re being, Jackelope. “Pipes” is a good way to refer to bagpipes in general, but the instrument most people think of as “bagpipes” is more properly known as the Great Highland Bagpipe. There are also small pipes, Uilleann Pipes, Spanish pipes…

Rufus Harley-- jazz piper. The guy’s weird as hell, but his music is actually pretty decent jazz.

Also, Mac Umba-- bagpipes with a Carribean beat behind them.
