The Sure Thing
My votes would be for either Serendipity or Down With Love.
I love 10 things I hate about you. It was just on the other day and it is a classic. There needs to be more films done as well as this.
While we are talking about Shakespeare Much Ado About Nothing is a wonderful romantic comedy
Beat me to it. One of my all time fav Steve Martin movies. Very sweet and funny at the same time.
Thanks for this thread, Waenera. Lots of new movies for my Netflix queue.
No problem. And I guess I’ll be off to Blockbuster, and we don’t have Netflix in Canada yet AFAIK.
Thanks again for all the great suggestions. I gave the “Social Committee” at work an abbreviated list, and they’ll be picking something to rent. Hopefully we’ll end up with something good.
Given the previous post, I hope I’m not too late…
The verysmall PC part of myself has a few problems with this movie night. It’s a very nice idea, but… it seems terribly heterosexist to me.
Sadly, I only have one suggestion to rectify that.
The Birdcage: Robin Williams is his usual, Nathan Lane is amazing, Dan Futterman as the son is great, and Hank Azaria is hysterical.
Rent isn’t out as a movie yet, more’s the pity…
Does anybody have any other suggestions?
What Finagle said. A much-overlooked movie.
True, I actually thought of that myself. However, out of about 60 employees (excluding the highest adminstrators, who almost definitely won’t be attending the movie showing), only three are male.
So social events in general tend to be somewhat girly. Lot and lots of potlucks, teas, movies (not necessarily romantic - this one will be because of Valentine’s Day - but not action movies). The last movie they showed was at Christmas - the Jim Carrey version of The Grinch, and the movie before that was Cold Mountain.
“The Awful Truth” with Cary Grant and Irene Dunne is quite wonderful; and even though it is rather frantic Eddie Bracken and Betty Hutton in “The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek” always leaves me smiling and feeling warm inside.
Gay romantic comedies? There’s not a lot of them, but I’ve seen two:
Jeffrey for the boys.
Kissing Jessica Stein for the girls.
I saw the former because I’ll watch anything with Patrick Stewart, but I admit I couldn’t stick with it. Too gay for me, but from what I could tell it seemed like a traditional romantic comedy.
Oops, I lopped off the last sentence. I saw the latter hoping against hope for something similar to Bound, but it was not to be; it had more of the feel of a Woody Allen movie.
I was pleasantly surprised by Return To Me starring David Duchovny and Minnie Driver.
Thanks, Waenara – I hope I didn’t jump on you too much. I hear what you’re saying, and things are very different for very small companies. And I don’t find movies, potlucks, or Cold Mountain girly in the least!
And thank you, Eliis Dee, as well!
Bump! Update!
Thanks again for all the great suggestions everyone. It turns out that the social committee at work has decided on… The Wedding Planner.
Oh well. I have a lot of good movie ideas from this thread. And I’m thinking of arranging a movie afternoon with some people at work to go see Sideways. I’ve heard it’s quite good, and a less formulaic comedy with romance.
I rather liked Murphy’s Romance.
Pity your planning committee picked such trash. Oh well. They wouldn’t have liked my suggestion of Year of the Comet as another good underrated film with wine.
I missed this thread the first time around. Oh well, for future reference…
L.A. Story (with Steve Martin, even better than Roxanne.)
Joe Versus the Volcano (overlooked, and inspiredly silly in places.)
My Man Godfrey (with the funniest closing line in movie history.)
What about Shaun of the Dead? It isn’t your average RomCom, and its a great film. Although it might not be completely work-safe…unless your workmates are fine with a little adult language, and over the age of 15?
Has anyone mentioned ‘Love Actually’ yet? One of only two movies I own, I love it. Warning though, there is a lot of nudity with that porn stand-in couple, if that matters. Though it’s rather tasteful.
And another for “Murphys Romance”. Has one of the best lines in it, right at the end when they’re fading out…
He’s way older than her. She says, “I’m falling in love for the first time in my life.” He says, “I’m falling in love for the last time.”
What about “Bend it Like Beckham”? I liked it a lot, kind of cute, sort of matches what you’re looking for–a romance and a misinterpreted one.
