My mom is disabled and on medicare/caid and we probably need to pick up some extra health insurance. Trying to get them (or any branch of the gov) to pay for anything is like trying to pull teeth. With her Dr’s appts and meds we are spending a few hundred bucks a month in medicare copay’s and deductibles.
Of course, she’s not eligible to ride my insurance so we’ll basically just be taking it out for her alone. Anyone have any clues on who and how much or any other related experience?
I don’t know anything about private carriers and costs – I’ve only had group coverage for many years.
Does she have Medicare or Medicaid? I believe there’s a difference, and a prospective carrier will need to know for sure what she already has.
If it’s Medicare, have you contacted the Social Security Administration to ask about supplemental coverage, like Part B?
If it’s Medicaid, which I think is a State program (?), she probably has a caseworker, and they might have info on supplemental policies.
I think no matter what you get, you’ll still be spending hundreds of dollars a month, whether it goes for an insurance premium or just out of your pocket, it’s going to be expensive.
Hmm. I had Aetna Open Choice PPO through work and it was amazing. You could go to a doctor on their list (and they had tons) and pay a small copay, or go outside the network and pay a little more. No referrals or anything. You want to see a specialist? Just make an appointment. I suspect it’s a quite expensive plan, though.
Currently, I have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia, through an individual health plan thing. I pay $50 a month and it’s a PPO, too. There’s a copay, but I can go to specialists and stuff without a referral. I haven’t gone to the doctor on it yet, so I don’t know too much about it.
