I used to be into music, oh, say, 15 years ago. Since then, I’ve turned into the proverbally Mature Adult who knows nothing about what’s going on with music today. Add in the fact that I live in a town with virtually NO radio stations that play anything other than 10 year old+ music (seriously; the songs they play are the same that I heard 10 years ago as “new alternative music” when I lived in a larger area) or top 40 Brittney Spears type stuff, and I’m hopelessly lost.
Now that The Wonder That Is Tivo allows me to play songs from my computer through the hi-fi ( ) in the living room, I’d like to actually have some music that’s new to me. I’ve listened to all my CDs at least a gazillion times.
So, given the list of what I like, what else can you recommend? I prefer things available on iTunes, but will actually get off my butt and order from Amazon if needed. I also prefer upbeat happy music - I want stuff I can play at a party, for example, not stuff to drown my sorrows with.
What I Like:
Funk - I’ve been really liking old Funk lately, Funkadelic & Earth, Wind & Fire
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Sheryl Crow
Led Zeppelin
Aerosmith (old stuff more than new)
Opera
Country Music (well, Mr. Athena aka Booka likes country more than I do, but I can live with it)
Santana
If you don’t mind branching out a little bit, I’d suggest Therion’s Vovin or Lacrimosa’s Elodia (although that’s just the least bit tough to find). Both should appeal to fans of opera who don’t mind more rock/metal stuff.
I’d also strongly recommend Dream Theater…maybe Images & Words.
Cracker in the iTunes Music Store:

Cracker is “American Traditional Rock” with with alternating country and alternative influences. Frontman David Lowery was also formerly the frontman for the genre-spanning Camper Van Beethoven, but fragmented away with a desire to create more “roots-rock” styled music, though the band still retains a tongue-in-cheek, quirky edge.
