Recreational softball!

Ok, who here does it? Whether for work or a community thing, or whatnot and whathave you.

I play in a moderately noncompetitive mixed league here in Washington with my work. It’s a lot of fun, really, except since I’m in terrible shape I’m hurting now (we played last night!).

We have some odd rules, too (it’s slow-pitch, btw). Everyone begins with a count of 1 ball and 2 strikes. If you hit two fouls, you’re out. If a male draws a walk and the next batter is a female, she can either walk or bat. You must have three females on the field (if you’re fielding, of course). Pitches must hit either the plate or the surrounding black mat in a 6-12’ arc to be considered a called strike. No leads.

How bout y’all?

Yup, I play in a coed church league. It’s pretty competitive, but our team is pretty rabid to win, which we usually do. We have a pretty solid team with a good mix of power and actual skill. Most rules are the same as above, except we start with a 1-1 count.

Heck, just this week I hit 2 grand slams in one inning. I guarantee that will never happen again for me.

Shoot, that’s what I meant to say. 1-2 would be a pretty stupid count!

You should just play one pitch. If it’s a strike you’re out, a ball you walk or you hit it.

This Chicago boy is just wondering - you all talking about real softball, or that little kittenball that wimps play with gloves?

Well, the neat thing about this league is that each game is no more than 1 hour long, so the ump does try to keep things moving. We usually get about 5 innings in. When there’s about 15 mins left, the ump tells us it’s the last inning.

I used to play. Then I got old, slow and fat.

Still trying to get this straight.

You ladies are talking about that game played with mitts and that little ball, that is essentially for ex-ballplayers who can’t hit decent pitching anymore. Yet they still desire that macho rush out of hitting a hardball a long way.

If that’s what you are talking about, I have one question: At what point do you resort to putting it on a tee?

16"
no mitts
unlimited arc
short center fielder
screw your well and your automatic counts.

Accept no substitutes.

Hey, no problem. Our pitcher, bless his soul, is all three of those. When he bats, he gets a pinch runner once he reaches base. The first time he batted this year, he smacked the crap out of the ball. It wound up being a triple, but only because his “running” was more like a home run trot. Heh. Dude’s got some torque in the ol’ bat.

I was in a church league that just got out. It was a co-ed league with a few similar rules. There have to be 4 girls on the field at once (10 total players on the field.) It’s “modified” fast pitch. Which means its not full on fast pitch, plus they have to take it easier on the girls. Batting order has to alternate between men and women. If a guy walks w/ two outs the girl can walk. Men get two bases on a walk and girls get one.

It’s pretty fun, but our team underachieved. We ended up 3-4-1. :frowning: The last two games (we were 3-2-1) a lot of our girls bailed for other things, so we had to make do with girls who don’t really play and our defense REALLY suffered.

I play catcher and 1st/3rd base. (But usually catcher, because I"m the only one who doesn’t let balls get behind me.)

Our league just ended though, and I’m so not done. So I’m gonna see about joining a city team, or see if we can get a softball team going here at work.
